  • GenJ Camp... fantasticly fun

Greetings my few and far between readers!

last week Generation Joshua, the group I am interning at, hosted their annual summer camp. I was placed daily in tough situations, frustrated hourly (remember, I am not a patience person), and blessed through it all. The 87 kids that came to the campus of Patrick Henry College were amazing, and even that word does not give each individual that I interacted with justice. Each had their own personalities, passions, and drives.

I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to interact with them in the course of the week. In DC, at the airport (lol, many many stories there), playing dodgeball, water balloon capture the flag, observing them in legislative session, bartering with them over Sierra Club money as a lobbyist or watching the quiet servant hood of so many as I supervised them cleaning the dining hall. Oh such memories.

It was also an honor to work with the GenJ staff as we supervised the teens that came from across the country to learn about the legislative and campaigning process. Every one of them encouraged me by their actions to strive daily to become more of a servant leader.  Some of the staff drove me insane, but that was a learning process, as my dear Cedarville roommate Lacy would say, God certainly has a sense of humor! He seems to have this knack of placing me in situations where I honestly don’t want to be, but that is how I learn best. One evening I single handedly disassembled (and didn’t break) four computers… certainly not something I planned on doing that evening (and something prior to last week, I had no idea how to do).

Then there was the airport. After my insane experience on Saturday when Joel (eventually) picked me up my only comment to him was “God is good.” What I was able to do at the airport Saturday should have been humanly impossible. Yet God was there.

That’s all for now, More later.

Quick synopsis of an action packed week on the campus of Patrick Henry College as a summer intern.

Last weekend I journeyed home for a weekend of fun with the peeps and the family. I watched The Pacifier with the family (love that movie... particularly the parrall parking job) and saw Twelth Night with the Freesen peeps at Blackfriar's. It was fantastic! I cannot count how many times I have seen that particular shakespeare show, but the actors at the ASC never fail to put a new twist on the fun. Sitting on stage certainly helped, besides two of my favorite ASC players, Greg and Alyssa, graced the stage. They never fail to amuse me...Greg as a french dude was quite the sight. To add to that, John Harrell as Malvolio in yellow cross-gartered stockings and a ridiculas grin provided laughter aplenty. Oh the joys of home!

I arrived back on campus Sunday evening and stopped in to witness the PHC teen camp counselors introducing themselves to the Moot Court and Drama campers... they are certainly a talented bunch! Although ONE *ahem* of them took my parking spot which forced me to have a nice little chat with Security.

Monday I was back on the job for an action-packed week as we compiled the final details of GenJ camp together. "To-do" lists have become by best-est of friends this past week in order to keep track of all the little things that needed to be done. A recent accomplishment of mine at work is answering phones... It took me forever to get up the courage to answer phones when I worked at the courthouse. Thankfully at GenJ the people I talk to are so much nicer then the mad angry parent's and felons that I talked to at the courthouse. ;) lol. It isn't nearly as confusing either and I don't have to worry about sending someone to jail accidentally if I say the wrong thing.

The highlight of my week was my trip to DC on Thursday. Will Estrada, the director of GenJ and HSLDA's lobbying branch, Federal Relations, invited me to go into DC with him and Amy Lynne (she started a week after I did and is hired on full-time). We met with a new Congressman from Lousiana, attended a conference on Privacy at the Heritage Foundation (they provided amazing "refreshments" aka lunch), met with one of Senator Vitter's aids, and attended at "VAT" meeting which stands for Values Action Team, a group composed of conservative interest groups (Eagle Forum, Concerned Women of America, Southern Baptist Conv, Prision fellowship, etc) and members of congress. A congresswomen from Michigan spoke briefly and GenJ actually worked on her campaign in 2006! My role the entire time was the shadow of sorts, following them around and observing Washington politics firsthand as we lobbied for homeschool specific legislation.

Friday of this week was insane, crazy, and all around chaos. Lists, packets, t-shirts, emails, phone calls, flight schedules, MONEY (fake), nametags...you get the point. We (Kaitlyn and myself) suggested in jest that Joel order Pizza since we had to work late and he actually took us up on it! :) It was good. :P I got off work in time to watch the closing scene from the Drama camp's Twelth Night. Of what I saw, it was very nicely done considering they only had a week to put it all together! Next the teen campers had their traditional skits which were cheesy, lame, and sometimes funny. lol. Honestly, they did phenominal considering they had such an insane week.

So today has arrived. SATURDAY! Tomorrow around 90 campers arrive and I get to do who knows what. I am meeting them at the airport and being an official "greeter" or whatever. :D This afernoon we're going to the appartment of a girl who just graduated from PHC, Kaylin, to eat brownies and have fun. Then Aubrey (current roommate) and myself are playing frisbee and going to another person's house for dinner. free food...

OK. That's all! Toodles folks. have a happy weekend!

    Work

I've been here two and a half weeks. I was mentally doning the math the other day and realized that I am already a quarter of the way through my internship. It is a scary and sad thought. At first coming to work at HSLDA was rather scary since I had no idea what was going on and also was trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. Thankfully I now have plenty to keep me busy and on my toes and even get to talk to people on the phone! I love talking to people, particularly people who actually want to talk to me (lol, in comparison to campaigning where people exercise their right to hang up quite frequently). Camp registration was supposed to close on Sunday, but we extended the deadline in an attempt to get more students. Since then it seems like people have been calling like crazy registering their kids. When I got here two and a half weeks ago registration was less than 40. Now we are at least over 75. It is so exciting seeing things coming together in a chaotic and not-so-orderly fashion. GenJ camp is going to be such a blast! We're going to D.C. on the 4th of July to see the fireworks which is going to be simply amazing, and crazy.

Today all the HSLDA staff got off for the annual picnic which included lots of amazing food. :) I spent time with two PHC alumni who were old and wise, one was even old and married (well, married like 6 weeks ago). lol. I also told roommate stories much to the amusement of Kaitlyn, the other female on the GenJ staff who is a student at PHC. Lacy has been so handy to have as a roomie due to the roommate stories that can be told.

    let's see... what else.

    Play

Last week flew by thanks to the teen leadership campers that invaded the campus for Spy Camp/SI camp. I volunteered three evening and got to interrogate aka ask random questions to the campers. The last night I got to be loud and play cards with a bunch of PHC student's in a "bar" for the kid's last mission. Then there was the camper who one of the counselors claimed was flirting with me... he even gave me $10!! but that's another story for another day.

Guido/Ben, is a random PHC student here loves games so nearly every friday and/or Saturday night we have had "Game nights" which are fun, particularly since I have mastered one of the games so I win most of the time. haha, that reminds me of another thing... but I'd have to post protected in order to share about it... maybe another day. lol. OK. that's all for now. I'm bored since I am room-mate-less for the rest of the week, which is another story. I think an inaugral trip to wal-mart is in order.

ohhh. For back-home-buddies... I'll be home this weekend and am up for wild adventures. I think a trip to the Shakespeare theater is in order (all the performances are pay-what-you-will!!! I know, i looked it up). Also, Greg and Alyssa are BACK at ASC. Another motivation to see shakespeare plays. So, anyone game for say Saturday night?

    **edit...Later...**

Inaugral trip to Wal-Mart was a disappointment. I hate non-super-wal-mart's. BUT, they had "my" cereal so I got some of that plus a few other random items that I sorta-not-really needed.

  • ...at phc...

On Monday I arrived and moved in and met the roommate. Her name is Aubrey and is from California. Therefore she = cool. :)

I've been having a lot of adventures here.

Aubrey invited me to Dr. Farris' house for a BBQ to meet Congressman Wolf and guess who I found there? Emily! It was a pleasant surprise and we had a nice chat and met random people... :) We then watched a random movie that we were invited to about WWII, forgot what it was called.

Tuesday... Well. I got to learn CPR and First Aid and so that was lots of fun. I guess they want me to know some of that stuff if I'm going to be a counselor for the GenJ camp in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I will not have to ever use the knowledge in real life, 'cause yeahhh.

Today I got to actually work in the office which has been adventure filled. We had a tornado warning so we went to the basement and then lost electricity so we got off work at 3:30. My "boss" or whatever his title is invited a bunch of us students to his house for food. So here I am! I haven't figured out wireless at PHC yet and people keep telling me different things as far as whether or not I can get it so yeah, I'm using wireless here until I figure it out. OK. That's all that's up.
