More subscribers
These subscribers have one thing in common - their names have absolutely nothing to do with their real names.
MaggieGirl - Her real name is Helen, but I bet you already knew that. She is very popular in xanga, presumably because she likes beer, sex, and movies. She is also the first blogger I ever saw reviewing their subscribers. I thought it was a pretty weird thing to do at the time.
Liz_A - I tease her that I'm her evil twin, but we're not related. Her real name is Nora. Like me, she is a typical housewife. She does post some nice family pictures on her site, I get the feeling that it isn't written for me.
gadwall - this is not a name, it's a duck. Jim is a nice guy who thinks about things and likes to discuss them with us. He is also in his forties, like me. I can realte to a lot of the things he thinks about, so I do enjoy his weblog.
FredPie - Not only is her name not Fred, she isn't even a guy! Monica is a nice mom who goes to school and has preschoolers. Her weblog is mostly just about her life - interesting to those who care about those kinds of things (like me), not to those who aren't.
Yes, I know that almost none of you use your real names in xanga. I don't know why not (so tell me!). Yes, Juliet is my real first name, and A is the first letter of my last name. I don't use my full last name because I am the only one in this city with this last name, and I am not anxious for any of you to call me unannounced (yes, it has happened, more often than my husband would have liked).
Funny, how we want to communicate, but not too much.

The phrase you used: "...not anxious for any of you to call me unannounced" is exactly why many people don't use their real names. Then for others, their aliases could be symbolic of someone or something important or just totally random in their lives. There are a billion motivations for aliases. The internet to many is only a virtual playground where you can be anyone or anything you wish. Some people really enjoy this parallel universe; it gives them a therapeutic outlet from their personal realities. We all have lives that are entirely unique from each other. One man's motivation may be another one's disgust.
i was hesitant to use my full name as well. if you notice, i rarely write anything about me. i am shy in that sense. :-)
btw, i used virgilmvx when i signed just because i did not know what i was getting into. by the time i wanted the site named to verboodles, it was too late.
OMG, my site is beggining to sound like the way you described maggiegirl's! i should start putting movies?
Shortest short explanation: Mom called me Fred, Dad calls me Pie (like sweetiepie) I smooshed 'em together for an "anonymous nickname" once and it stuck.
AND I don't like to use my rl name online, and am a little surprised at myself for using my boys' rl names and a rl picture of us. :-)
Gotta love knowing that you think my best friend is worth reading ,and I quote...I can realte to a lot of the things he thinks about, so I do enjoy his weblog.
I on the other hand am just a boring little housewife with nothing to interest you *sigh*
This whole thing is too damned hard on a fragile self esteem.
I read your site because I enjoy it. Or at least I did until you started on the review the subscriber thing...and not just because you don't like my site. I think the whole subscriber business bites.
