  • CARES, RICHES, AND PLEASURES

    Luke 8:14
And that which fell among the thorns are they, which, when they have heard the word of God, and go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

    Have you been choked?

I think about the time when this was written and think that today we have so much more to be distracted by, care about , plenty of riches, and the pleasures of sin always at our fingertips. Then it reminds me that human nature has not changed and it is a condition of that nature that we fall into temptation. We must stay focused on our Lord so that we do not give in to the cares, riches, and pleasures of this world. God know that when we do this we are to busy with us to bear fruit for Him.

    Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I think you have to ask wether or not the fruit you are bringing is being brought to perfection. I think that I pat myself on the back for my Christianity sometimes only to look back and see that it is tainted by a worldly mindset that occasionally slips in.

I think it is a daily battle to not allow ourselves to be choked by the cares of this life. We all have so much that happens through out our week. If we are not pressing into Christ and abiding in His Word, waiting and continually seeking to draw nearer to Him throughout the week, our tendency is to do just that. It seems to happen so gradually sometimes. I am just so very thankful that we have the opportunity to abide in Him. Us, being the wretched sinners that we are are able to come to Christ and continually rest in Him throughout our daily tasks and trials. He is so faithful and trustworthy!

THAT'S EXACTLY HOW I FEEL LATELY, ((LARRY))! I'VE STARTED THIS NEW JOB, WANTING TO MAKE MEGA $$ TO GET US A BIGGER HOME. THIS HAS STOPPED MY BIBLE STUDY TIME WITH GOD AND I FEEL AMISS, WITH MY FOCUS ON THE "PLEASURES" OF LIFE. I TOLD GOD YESTERDAY THAT I FEEL SO UNWORTHY, OFTEN A SORRY EXCUSE FOR A CHRISTIAN, WHEN I AM SO EASILY DISTRACTED! I HOPE TO DO BETTER AND TO REFOCUS ON HIM! PLEASE REMEMBER ME IN PRAYER!

    LOVE, CHERYL

Don't know how to answer that. I don't think I've been focusing on Him as much as I should have.

Don't know how much you've been following (ok...hardly at all, since that's the frequency of my story updates), but I have a really short excerpt from my story posted on my Facebook site. It's listed as a 'note.' It's somewhere down the left side of my profile.

Hi. Thanks for the comment. I think there have been a lot of questions about his faith, but the Biblical references he made throughout his life are amazing. Did you ever hear of the story when he was shot at several times, had horses shot out from under him, and found bullet holes in his jacket when he took it off? It used to be told to children in our public schools, but was removed many years ago because of its connection with God.

Regarding your comment, I believe that every Christian needs to be on guard from being snared by the traps you mentioned. Trying to keep "balanced" in this world is tough, but not impossible as long as we keep our eyes and hearts on Jesus. We need to continually ask ourselves if we are spending enough time with God, whether or not we need or just want something, and other questions like that.

Sometimes, our pride can blind us when we are being choked at times.  There are various levels of being choked. I praise God when He does help weed me out when I chose to allow it.  Sometimes, the weeding experience is not fun but then you realize you were being choked in ways.

    Re: story inspiration-
I had already decided before writing/posting the excerpt to have something like that occur between those two characters. For the more specific details, I was sitting at the computer trying to think of what to write, and somehow I got to thinking of a scene from the movie Twister. I took part of that and adapted it to fit my story.

I haven't figured out what the tragedy is that I referred to in the excerpt. Like I said, I don't know what part of the story the excerpt is from.
