It turns out that the shooting knee pains come from neglecting to stretch an obscure muscle.. the "I.T. band" I think it's called. Basically you can stretch that by standing with your legs apart, raising your arms over your head, then leaning to either side; you'll feel it stretching. It runs from your knee to your hip. So in case you wanted to give running another try... ;) do that.
