  • GEEK TO CHIC? BEING POPULAR IN HIGH SCHOOL DOES NOT MATTER

check out my review of their clothing at glittergrrrls.com.

So I've finally reached that stage in my life where I start reminiscing about my days in high school and college. Ah yes, fun times they were! But those times of laughter and merriment were not without their share of tears, tantrums, and just the general feeling of awkwardness about growing up.
br Sure, I had a healthy number of close friends, but I wasn't a cheerleader, I didn't date the cutest jock in school, and by no means was I anywhere near a size 2. It was more like 2 x 4 - hehe.

I remember being completely unpopular in high school. There were times when I used wished I could trade with the most popular girls in school, just to see what it would feel like. Even now, as I watch my sister go through her high school years, I sometimes get that "Never Been Kissed" moment where I wish I could go back the way I am now, wow everyone, and be the envy of all the other girls.

Well, I used (keyword "used") to wish that. That is until I noticed something in the last couple of months that made me realize how much life can change.  I have had the fortunate or unfortunate (depending on how you look at it) circumstances of running into old classmates from elementary school to high school.

I was rather shocked by the appearances of these old colleagues. The thinnest, most popular, or girls considered to be the hottest gained a lot of weight and just had this general look of individuals who apparently let themselves go. The heavy girls from high school were now slim, beautiful, and looked like they just stepped out of a magazine. The geekiest guys were now buff in tight muscle shirts. The kind of guys you do double takes with. Believe it or not, 9 times out of 10 this was the case with every meeting.

So what exactly happened here?  *scratches head*
Is this one of the great ironies of the world?

This is teaching me a great lesson about growing up. Individual definition is constantly growing and evolving, (physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc) so to worry about whether fitting in or not at any age, is just plain silly!

    cute fit. i've known many people within four years who have evolved from ugly ducklings, and i know many people who just let themselves go. {l}
  • JAnie_iSh_me

Oh most definitely. Yes to both.

It just goes to teach everyone the most comforting fact that appearances aren't everything and that our pasts are by no means the determinants of our fate. Not to mention it sheds some ray of hope for the rest of us who weren't the coolest ones in town. Maybe someday later on in our lives, we'll be able to live a life unlike that which we've been living thus far.

I love how you make me think! *hug*

i love your topic in this post. i'm still in high school, i'm awaiting in ten years to see my classmates.
  • meowmi_chikadee

me. i look like a geek in high school.

btw, has my cousin replied to you yet?

  • Ace_Shogun

I think it's the pressure to fit in from our younger years that drives us to improve ourselves. Somewhere in the process we find out who we really are, as we're constantly looking inward on ourselves. None of the popular kids seemed very genuine to who they were. Now it seems as if they're lost in a world that no longer adheres to social barriers.

At least that's my spin on it =P

WOW, does this whole geek turns into hot guy thing happen everywhere, or just in your area? If it's everywhere then there's hope for me yet

You look very sexy in that outfit

It is silly, but it's unavoidable. I don't think anyone can go through high school without worrying about fitting in almost daily. It's just a part of high school that no one really enjoys, but people are forced into having to worry about the smallest things others are thinking of them, whether they wore the right clothes, whether they're accepted or not. Who the hell decided whether another person is "accepted" or not? Before I go off on a rant, I'll end it here.

Again, it's silly, but something that I've expereinced many times, and still am, and still will be, because right now I'm right in the middle of high school.

they last for 3-4 months. if they fall off due to washing or if it has already reached 180 days (eyelash lifetime), you can always go back to the salon and they will touch up for you free of charge.

most of the popular schoolmates i had in h.s. are totally the opposite now.  most of them got married young already have lots of  kids and didn't even finish college or they simply just didn't live up to their old reputation.  c'est la vie, et cetera...
  • greatasianhype

    Thats a hot picture!

I use to be a geek in school.  The popularity did not come until college years.

  • jw1976

I recently went to a wedding w/ all these "pop." ppl from HS, and they all turned super duper fat. I think that they feel they have nothing to prove to ppl, so they just let themselves go. if you wanna see pics, click here:

(now that i look at it, i didnt take that many pics of the fatter ppl)
Ppl that were less accepted in HS still have that drive to show the world how misunderstood they were. They continue improving themselves every month, meanwhile the "popular crowd" wrongly thinks of itself as having a lifelong pass of social acceptance. Just be careful not to let this misunderstood status consume your life. I know ppl that were so preoccupied w/ this inferiority complex that they let it run thier lives, constantly trying to prove that they were good enough. No one has to prove anything to thier past.

    talk more soon.
