"Crazy Ladies in Patty's Honor"

Patty's Obituary

Here is the obituary for my friend Patty.
Obituary
Patty Raaf
April 6, 1958 - Sept., 16, 2008

Devoted daughter, wonderful sister, gifted teacher, and citizen of the world, Patricia J.  Raaf died on September 16, 2008 at home. She was surrounded with the love of family, friends and Father Tom Dentici.  A vigil prayer service will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 21, at the Snowmass Community Chapel.  All are welcome to share favorite memories at this service.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 22nd, at 11:30 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aspen.

Patty’s great devotion led her to spend the last five years of her life caring for her parents, Jim and Angela Raaf of Snowmass Village, making great personal sacrifices so that her parents could continue living in the home they loved.  Caring for her parents was the greatest joy of Patty’s life, and she did so with extraordinary dedication.

Patty was also a citizen of the world.  Born in Santiago, Chile, on April 6, 1958, she lived there until moving to Ecuador in 1965.  In 1967 she moved to La Paz, Bolivia.  She graduated with a BA in Education from St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, in 1981 and continued her studies toward a Masters in Special Education in California.  She taught children in the primary grades in California, Bolivia, Columbia, Mali, Ethiopia, and Brazil.  A supremely gifted teacher, Patty loved her students as though they were her own children.

She also loved, respected, and deeply understood the people and the cultures in which she lived and visited.  In addition to English she spoke Spanish, Aymara (an Andean Indian language), German, French, and Portuguese.

Patty filled the lives of those around her with laughter, joy, high spirits, and love.  She was a spark in every gathering.  You never knew what was going to come out of her mouth.  Her smile filled a room; the gleam in her eye brightened it.  She has an amazing network of friends in countries around the world.  During her lengthy illness, Patty found great comfort in reading their messages on www.thestatus.com that tracked her health.

Throughout her illness, Patty faced a difficult situation with courage, stubbornness, and abiding good humor.  She will always remain an inspiration to her family, friends, and students.

Patty is survived by her parents, Jim and Angela Raaf, and her sisters and brothers in law, Angie and Jochen Widdel, Barbara and Rainer Wolff, Maria Elena and Scott Medlock, her twin Pam and Ivan Prince, and Susie Raaf, as well as all her nieces and nephews.  In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent in memory of Patricia Raaf to UNICEF, the Christian Children’s Fund, or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

This is not the outcome we were expecting. I will miss her terribly. Susie will now be taking care of her parents. I am going to the funeral. Pray that I make it in time for the memorial service as well. Dd#1 will be traveling with me.

We got the keys

Our realtor called with the great news yesterday that we could get keys on Thursday instead of Friday.
We drove up in rush hour traffic which took us about 2 hours to get there. We washed the walls in preparation for painting.
Today was spent painting. dd#4 & 5 are sharing a room. They chose pink walls with a dark lavender trim. dd#3and ds painted their walls blue with green trim. Dds #1 & #2 divided their room in half. Dd#1 painted her walls a light blue in preparation for mural she wants to paint. Dd#2 left the wall off white and is decorating with spray paint. She is doing a great job. I painted the school room yellow with a blue trim. The doors need an extra coat of paint as does the trim. I am quite happy with the way it turned out.

Tomorrow, dh gets the moving van. Several friends are coming over to help load.

On the sad side, my friend who is battling breast cancer seems to be losing her battle. I am trying to see when I can go visit her. Supposedly she has only a few weeks left. She is 50.

dear son's birthday

This is the cake that his sister's decorated for him. He has a spiderman case that they used to copy the design. I love the way he answers when asked his name,"Christopher Paul Beatty."

It's hard to believe that my son is now 6 years old. He is learning to ride a two wheel bike today. Dh took a video of him riding.

I am still working on his spiderman blanket. I ran out of blue yarn when I had 3 more blue rows to knit. I have added about 25 yards so far. I will post the exact amount once I finish that section.

I pack for a couple of hours then I take a knitting break. I want to finish ds's blanket before we move in.

Packing, packing and more packing.

I have been busy packing. We still do not have a closing date but we are out of our rental on the 15th. My pastor's wife tells me it is a great birthday present. I packed up my cookbooks and my casserole dishes along with cookie sheets and pizza pans. I am making pizza for dinner using cookie sheets that were not packed.

I finally downloaded the photos of the fair. The first is a photo of me next to the display case holding the second place winning doily. This was knit for the Casablanca shawl. I should have turned off the flash. The second photo is a close up of the doily and ribbon.

Many who attended the fair complained about how the items were displayed. You can sort of tell from the photo how crowded the items were displayed--one on top of the other.

We attended a Giants game as dd#2's choir was singing the national anthem. She is on the "jumbo tron" at the far right. She has short, dark hair and dark glasses with clear lenses. You cannot see her shirt.

I knit 2 washcloths for my friend, Patty. I remembered that she loved smiley faces when we were in high school together. Her cancer has returned in full force. She is in a lot of pain and is on oxygen. I wanted to give her something to cheer her up. I also made a wrapper cloth for her in her favorite color--green. Susie, h
er sister, was visiting and took it back with her. Please keep them in your prayers.

This shows the wrapper cloth all wrapped up with the smiley cloth inside.

I won a prize in the bookmark creativity contest. Only 6 people entered bookmarks. The categories were original pattern, best use of non traditional materials and adapting a pattern. Brian had wanted to award 5- prizes. There were only 2 bookmarks in each category. He then declared everyone a winner as he said it was too hard trying to choose one winner out of 2 bookmarks. If you look back to August, there are photos of the 2 bookmarks I entered. I knit one out of plastic bags and added beads to the gull wings bookmark pattern. I received a bag stuffed full of Peaches and Cream threads.

 This is what I received:
1 ball  Cotton Gloss 230 yds color: Red
1 ball  Cotton Jewel 77yds color: Super saphire
1 ball  Merc. cotton size 10 330 yds color: Spring meadow
1 ball  Rayon chenille 88 yds color: Lemon
