| | "I want something else, to get me through this semi-charmed kind of life, baby baby" ~Third Eye Blind.
Do you remember that song? I think I was a sophmore in high school when I first heard the song, and it was all the rage. Well this past weekend at the Noree Bong (karaoke room) I found out what the lyrics of the song really are, and let me just say they are a bit scandalous. They talk about drug abuse and sex, and such. In fact it kind of glorifies it, until you get to the chorus, which is the line above. I realize now why this is such a mantra for a generation. We are all searching for something else, while going from one "drug" to the next. What a cry for truth, how tremendously honest and yet pop-y at the same time. Part of me feels like i "should" put something in at this point about the fact that God is that thing we are all looking for, but I think there is a deeper truth here. I think even people that have God are searching for something at times, and that's truth, we live in a semi-charmed kind of life. Atleast that's how I feel sometimes.
I am sorry it's been awhile since I have written, I have had a bit of writers block. Although a co-worker suggested a take a week off of work to try and come up with something, i decided to just give a mediocre post. Life here has been pretty sweet so I guess I'll try to share some of the sweet stuff I have been up to. This last week I spoke 3 times for the different chapels here at school. It was pretty nerve racking, but also fun to do again. I basically shared the story from my last post. I had my birthday this last week also, that was pretty fun. Inspite of me doing my best to keep it on the down low, a number of the RAs and a dorm parent suprised me and took me out to lunch to the meat buffet. Let me just say, if there was meat scented cologne I would wear it. Then Sally made a chocolate cake that was REALLY good and it had a skull and crossbones on it- like a pirate! Allegedly, it's "korean tradition" to smear icing all over the birthday boy/girl's face on their special day. That night, my dorm students were quick to let me experience that. So now I feel like I am part of the culture, I am practically Korean. Thanks to all of you who sent cards or emails! So last night, 7 coworkers and myself headed out to the Noree bong for some late night rock and roll. For posterity sake, I'll give you names- Scott (me), Chris, Sally, Lanny, Virginia, Michelle, Kara, and so I don't want to get Kirsten in trouble with her parents, I'll leave her name out. I will admit, I do love to ROCK! It was an awesome time of just all around ridiculousness, I mean what's better than a room full of westerners busting out Gangsta's Paradise (foo)? I guess the biggest news isnt what I have done, but what I am going to do. I leave friday morning at 4am to go to The Philipines (is the word "the" capatalized in this situation) for a habitat 4 humanity trip. I am so incredibly stoked! unfortunately, it means I wont be updating for awhile, but my next update should be freakin awesome! Granted i am sure this trip has nothing on Branson, MO, but I imagine it will still be pretty cool. Please keep us in your prayers during this time.
I'll leave you with a picture of me from the Noree bong, stolen from Michelle's xanga site.

ok, short random tangent. I hope it's not vain that I put pictures of me up on my website, but I figure my stateside readers arent really going to care that much about the people they don't know- let me know what kind of pictures YOU want to see in the future.
thanks for the prayer. keep it real. [no haiku, it's not friday] |
