  • External Components

This is not a real post--I'm still hoping to get some feedback about what kind of posts you guys like. (See previous post.) I will get back into the swing of blogging, but a little guidance would be nice... But what I really want to know now is: Does anyone own an external DVD burner and could you tell me how you like it? I'm thinking of getting one but am totally lost. There are so many choices out there. Anything advice would be appreciated :)

Update: I am referring to an external DVD burner to connect to my PC.

What are you looking to do with an external DVD burner? Do you mean one that is attached to your PC? If so, please know that the data transfer rate will be slower than having an internal one, which means it'll take longer to burn disks.

If you're using it to record TV shows, I really don't have any experience with that, but a Media Center PC would be ideal, acting as a free Tivo that you don't need to pay any subscription fees to use,and you can record to DVD after you've editted out all the commercials.

I don't know anythinga bout external DVD burners. ...

But would you happen to know anything about all-region dvd players? I have this disc that's region two only, but I haven't gotten the chance to watch it at all. D:

Anyway, I wanted to ask you about EO 9066, but I was afraid that it was going to stirr up really bad memories for you, so I refrained from asking. D: Sadly, I procrasinated on that project for so long that the essay portion of it was HORRIBLE. D: (I was going to compare the effects of EO 9066 and how it affected the Japanese citizens more than it did Germans, but I ... didn't have time D: BOOOOO.)

However, I think my collage kicked butt. \:D/

Regarding posts, I actually prefer topics on history or Japanese literature. Then again, I'm likely in the minority. I really enjoyed whenever you honed in on some particular aspect of Japanese literature as it relates to culture, or anything of that sort--well, not just literature, but movies and such as well.

Regarding DVD burners... Are you looking for one for your computer? If that's the case, I'm not sure what's best in terms of brands, but I will say that it's best to make sure it's a DVD+/-RW burner (meaning, it can burn to DVD-R, DVD+R, and rewritable discs). Speed probably shouldn't be a major factor, particularly if it's not gonna be your main disc drive. If you're looking for a DVD-Recorder for your TV, that's another case, and I can't really help you there. KF

I've always enjoyed stories about your past and historical, cultural, and political discussions.

As for burners, 'fraid I can't help you much there.  I'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to the latest computing technology these days.

External DVD burners are basically internal DVD burners (for desktops) in a little box gussied up to connect to your computer via a cable, usually USB 2 or Firewire. The data transfer (both reading and writing) will be a bit slower than if you had an internal DVD burner. If you have a laptop and can't upgrade the drive for some reason or another, it's probably the way to go. If you have a desktop, I'd recommend replacing an existing drive, if possible..

why an exteranl one? i'd opt for an internal dual layered dvdr if you have a desktop
goto http://www.newegg.com and read the reviews before you buy

If you have a desktop, just get an internal one.

If you have a laptop, just get one that has all of the write/read capabilities you need at the lowest cost. Make sure to specify usb2/firewire depending on what you have on your laptop.
