What qualities does a person need to have in order to be a good leader?
I'm going to qualify this answer, this is my description of a positive leader, afterall, Hitler was an incredibly successful leader, however, I would not say he was a positive influence on the world.
Integrity. Charisma. Intelligence. Honesty. Humility. Compassion.
Many of my readers know it is no secret that I am fascinated by the personality archetypes. My casual research has led me to an interesting fact. There has never been an Idealist elected to the office of President of the United States of America.
In fact in more than a century, according to Keirsey, if there has been an Artisan in the general election the Artisan won. Artisans and Guardians are more prevelant in the population than Idealists or Rationals, so it makes sense that there would be more of them in those roles. But from 1960 till 2004 the presidents have all been either Artisan Performers or Guardian Supervisors. Dr. Keirsey even goes so far as to predict who will win the 2008 election. Of course, only time will tell.
I just answered this Featured Question, you can answer it too!

Personality archetypes are really fascinating. And if you're interested, you should check out the documentary "The Power of Nightmares." It gives an interesting run down of why a lot of elected officials today pose themselves as they do. The documentary can be viewed online free from the BBC.
Charisma is all it takes to make onesself an effective leader. But being a good one is a totally different matter.
And I'm not sure about no idealist ever being elected. Our earliest presidents, and the other founding fathers seem quite idealistic to me.
I read about this in Slate - it was a good read. Poor Hillary, that is her biggest problem, everyone knows in their guts that she is a Guardian and though they are the glue that holds our civilization together, they make people nervous in positions of authority.
its fascinating really, thanks!
All the qualities you mention are good virtues in someone who is a leader, but first they have to get there and getting there requires different qualities. Giving good parties always helps though.
That was very interesting reading! thanks for including the link. :)
