Police Officer Randal (Randy) Simmons
Los Angeles Police Department
California

End of Watch: Thursday, February 7, 2008
Cause: Gunfire

Biographical Info
Age: 51
Tour of Duty: 27 years
Badge Number: Not available

Officer Randy Simmons was shot and killed as he and other members of the Los Angeles SWAT Team made entry into a home at approximately 12:30 am. The team had been deployed to the home after a suspect inside called 911 and claimed to have murdered three family members.

As the team entered, the suspect opened fire, striking Officer Simmons and a second officer. Both officers were immediately transported to Northridge Medical Center, where Officer Simmons succumbed to his wounds approximately 30 minutes later.

Officer Simmons had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for 27 years. He is survived by his wife, two children, parents, and
three sisters.

"Everything that you've read or heard about Officer Simmons/Minister Randy is true...and then some. He was the consummate law enforcement professional and one of the highest ranking African-American LAPD officers; however, he was more than that.

He was a believer in Christ and he used every opportunity to share his faith and love for God with the young people who came to "the bus ministry" or as you've heard it called, "Glory Kids." He gave of himself tirelessly for more than 12 years, every weekend both Saturdays and Sundays. How many people do you know that would work a dangerous, stressful job like SWAT detail for a living and then give their weekends to the challenging task of mentoring young people, considered "at risk" for violence, gangs, drugs and the like. I'm thankful that I had a chance to know and worship with him and his family. I'm thankful that he loved God enough to reach out to young people who needed his love. I'm thankful that Randy knew, "only what you do for Christ will last." The testimony of his life lives on.

God Bless the Simmons Family. You are in my prayers."

"I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause,

I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;

I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame,

I’d rather be true to His holy name."

There were so many accolades given to Randy and the best thing about them is that they always pointed to Jesus. People had no doubt whom he truly served. I loved his pastor - reminding us that what we live in is only a tent - made me think of my own mother telling me that. One thing for sure, everyone had an opportunity to accept Jesus that day. The cameras didn't show us, but apparently a lot of hands went up. Oh, that pastor was good! Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other dignitaries were in the audience. What a legacy this 51 year old SWAT team officer left behind. I'll have to look him up when I get to heaven!

"Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away."  James 4:14

Only one life,

'Twill soon be past;

Only what's done

For Christ will last.

It is always so sad to hear when a police officer dies in the line of duty. My ex son in law was a police officer.

I pray that his family will be comforted. He certainly did his work here on earth!

Thanks for sharing,
Kerri

Thanks for the post Carolyn. I had not heard about this. What a man! Now he rests in the arms of the One he served. I pray that his family will rest in those arms as well during their time of grieving.

Blessings to you. I trust you have a great week.

I also heard that this is the first SWAT officer to ever be killed. As sad as it is...isn't it good to know he loved the Lord! If one had to lose their life, there is peace in knowing he has gone home to be with Jesus!

It's nice to hear of an officer who loved the Lord so much.

Gives me hope there is more of them out there.

It can break your heart to see school age kids protesting what they don't know about instead of being at school and getting a real education instead of brainwashing

We have police officer friends. My wife was the Sunday School teacher of an officer's daughter.  The little girl prayed each Sunday in class, that her daddy would not be killed. It was heart wrenching.

The service for Randy Simmons was truly a testimony of our Lord's grace and love and comfort...I was at work but heard excerpts later -- I pray for his son with much earnestness. By the way, thank you for visiting me today -- we must be So. Cal. neighbors, too :sunny:  Blessings, Laurie

Thank you for sharing his beautiful life and the funeral service with us, Carolyn. The Bible verse certainly fit, as did the closing quote. That is the type of life to live - for Christ's glory all the way. Love you... Carolyn:love:
