New favorite quotes from the living and the dead, the real and the fictional.

A woman who pretends to be serious is wasting her time and spoiling her good looks. ~ Lord Peter Wimsey

It is far more seemly to have thy Studie full of Bookes, than thy Purse full of money. ~ John Lyly

If the idea is not at first absurd, then there is no hope for it. ~ Albert Einstein

One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries. ~ A.A. Milne

"Suppose your Aunt Dahlia read in the paper that you were going to be shot at sunrise?" "I couldn't be. I'm never up so early." ~ P.G. Wodehouse

Working for a lawyer, you get to have strange little things on your key chain, and people ask about them, and you get to say, "those are little things you pass over the copy machines at the court house to get discounts on copies." ~ Eddie

""A gun is like a rattlesnake. You can try to keep it in a cage, but sooner or later it's going to get out and hurt someone."" - J. Wheeler, spokeswoman for an anti-gun group "Ceasefire Oregon." (as quoted in the latest NRA magazine) "Folks, let me tell you, it's true!  I had a narrow escape today when my Glock climbed out of the safe and emptied a whole mag into the wall beside me. And Kyle tells me he's seen marks inside the safe where the shotgun had been trying to beat the door out." ~ Kent

When you come to a fork in the road, take it. ~ Yogi Berra

A certain boy leaning up against me would not allow my elbow room, and struck me very sadly in the stomach part, though his own was full of my parliament. And this I felt so unkindly, that I smote him straightway in the face without tarrying to consider it, or weighing the question duly. Upon this he put his head down, and presented it so vehemently at the middle of my waistcoat, that for a minute or more my breath seemed dropped, as it were, from my pockets, and my life seemed to stop from great want of ease. ~ from Lorna Doone

(Mommy! he presented his head vehemently at the middle of my waistcoat and my life seemed to stop from great want of ease! Make him stop!)

He's talking about serious subjects. I mean, not something like the state of an earthworm stored under pressure for five years or anything. ~ Amanda

P.S. A good reason to have AIM: these are all favorite away messages of mine.

Some of those are really funny, Karoline...  I need to start checking away messages more often, I guess. :)

I love them all! Especially the Lord Peter Wimsey one, although I don't agree with it. Some women look much prettier when they're serious, I think... but I really like the Einstein and Lyly quotes.

The bit in italics isn't from Lorna Doone, Eddie, it's my own poking fun at it. No, I haven't read Lorna Doone. The excerpt above should demonstrate why: I like old writing styles, but that one is simply too convoluted. It's too bad too even be funny for very long.

Are you aquainted with Dorothy Sayers and her aristocratic detective Lord Peter, Katie? I wish I could find Lord Peter's quote about clothes. I think it's in Murder Must Advertise.
