Amanda, Amy, Jennifer, Sara, now Erin, soon Jamie. That makes six weddings for six friends over five years. Those first several weddings, I remember being amazed that my friends were getting married. I still thought of us all as very young, still little girls. Now the bittersweet side is starting to register. Every wedding is something of a farewell, at least for those of us who are single. Marriage makes a lot of difference in a friendship. It's a profound union: two have become one flesh, and you can never think of your friend as simply herself (or himself) again.

It's a change, and has its edge of sadness for those of us who will be most conscious of the change, but it's a mystery and a glory too, and nobody is debarred from reveling its picture of Christ and His church. Erin and Daniel, may He grant you according to your hearts' desire, and fulfill all your plans.

Go forth, O daughters of Zion,
And see King Solomon with the crown
With which his mother crowned him
On the day of his wedding,
The day of the gladness of his heart.
