| | It must be summer again. I'm posting fragments from emails. It seems I rediscover email over the summers, and forget about it again every school year.
~~~ I've written to so many people today that it would be plain unfair if I didn't email you too. ;) It's probably a surprise to find my name popping up in your inbox, but then, the point of this email, (however much of a point it has anyway) is that surprises never cease. I don't know what God's doing in the wacky little place called Campbell University, but He appears to be doing something. Over the last week I've been astonished by three requests for recommendations on books about Calvinism and Reformed theology.
I've consulted my father, but I'd be happy to hear recommendations from you on accessible introductions to Reformed theology / Calvinism. :)
I don't know what's up with this escalating interest in Calvinism. I'm not sure whether it has its roots in rebellion against what Daddy, Mommy and Pastor say, or whether people are really sensing something unusual, powerful, and solidly rooted about this Calvinism stuff. Knowing human nature, it's probably some combination of the two.
It's looking like I'm a lady of leisure for the summer. I'd work if I could, but since work doesn't seem to be forthcoming, I'll just enjoy the season with a right good will. There's nothing like driving yourself insanely hard for a year to teach you how to rest. That sounds paradoxical. Still true. I'm going to hit some of the final concerts and ballets of the season over the next couple weeks. I'm majorly looking forwards to that! I'm hoping to go to A Midsummer Night's Dream by the Carolina Ballet Saturday afternoon, and Turandot next weekend: I've always wanted to see Puccini performed live! I'm pretty sure I can get into the ballet on a student rush ticket ($5) but I don't know about the opera. If you have any interest in either, DO let me know! I'll call them up and try hard to persuade them to let you in on a student ticket!
I went down to Burrage this morning to pick out some music - I forgot how exciting that is! I browsed to my heart's content. I wish I could play it all. I'm trying to pick a concerto for next year, and hesitating between the Beethoven 4th, the Prokofieff 3rd, the Schumann, or maybe Liszt. I'm not a big Liszt fan but the Totentanz might be cool. ;) I also picked up a jazz book and some hymn arrangments. I'm gathering pieces that I can play at events. It's nice to have a variety of selections on hand when someone calls you up to do a gig. I learned the hard way.
I've been sitting outside in the back yard reading this last hour or so. The grass is long, and tickles my legs when I walk, which is annoying, but when I sat down in the lawn chair and took my shoes off it felt oh so fresh and soft and cool. Did you ever realize how dazzling green is? Every so often I'd look up from my page, and be fairly blinded by the green all round. I also discovered that our back yard is a fairy tale. At the far end from where I had my chair, just on the edge of the woods, there's a little tree that bowed over during one of the hurricanes or ice storms. It makes the most perfect arch - it looks magical. The ground rises right under it, and it's grassy, so it looks like the yard doesn't end - more like it just disappears through the arch. I was reading a book on Christianity and culture first, but I finally got into such a holiday mood that I pulled out Under the Tuscan Sun and read about summer life in Italy.
I want - no - you MUST come up (or I'll come down if you can't spare the driving time!) sometime in the next WEEK so we can DO something together!
I love you!
Karoline
