Silversun Pickups

So Brian and I went to the Silversun Pickups/OK Go/Snow Patrol concert in Austin Saturday night at Stubb's BBQ. They were playing in Dallas the night before, but it was at the Nokia Theater, which sucks, so we decided to preempt that and take a drive down south.
It was totally worth it.
The venue was really cool. It's this little BBQ place two blocks from 6th Street. They have an adjacent outdoor amphitheater-type place that holds maybe 2,000 or so and has little beer stands around the outside of it. It wasn't over-21, so there were a lot of families there with their preteen daughters waiting anxiously to see Snow Patrol. I like Snow Patrol and OK Go, but we were definately there to see SSPU.
I'd gotten the chance to see them at the Tea Room (which is closing this month, no!) last October with Dead Meadow and Wolfmother. If it's possible, they were even better this time around. I told Brian as soon as they were done, "They were so fantastic, I want to cry."
The best part was, after they played, they were in the back of Stubb's signing autographs. Inexplicably, there weren't that many people there, so we kind of had them all to ourselves. After getting our stuff signed, we just stood and chatted and had drinks with all four of them for like two hours. It was absolutely amazing. A night I will never forget as long as I live.
And being from LA, I was bracing myself for them to be assholes, but they couldn't have been more grounded. They haven't hit the mainstream big yet despite having three singles, three music videos and appearances on Carson, Conan and Leno already just in the past couple of months. But let me tell you, Carnavas, their first full-length album, is the best thing I've heard in at least ten years. Incredible. And their EP, Pikul, is just as cool.
I could shoot myself for not bringing charged batteries for my camera, though. I took a few with my phone camera, but they didn't come out great. The best part was just getting to talk with them like that, though. That's something I wouldn't have been able to take a picture of anyway.
