Yep. A replica of Arwen's sword from the
Lord of the Rings movies. I found one on eBay for a fabulous price and couldn't resist...it's good to be easily amused, and to have some disposable income. The one I got came with a scabbard, not a stand, so I'm going to hang it on the wall. It'll look good there.
When I bought it I put in the library as my shipping address, just because I didn't want UPS to leave it on my doorstep at home while I was at work. I showed it off to everybody in my department when it came on Friday; a high point of an otherwise remarkably dreary week.
Friday was a pretty good day. I threw some girls out for being loud and rowdy, but they didn't argue about it. Some of the boys I'd thrown out on Thursday were back in again, but without their ringleader (who'd been banned for the day) they were fine. After work I met some friends for Downtown Alive, the weekly live music in the Parc San Souci (a blues band this time, but I never caught the name), and then went to dinner at the new tapas place where Chris's Poboys used to be (expensive, but good).
I was venting to my friend the Brit about the bad kids at the library this week, and she remarked that she's really pessimistic about the future of society. These are the kids who'll be taking care of us when we're old! But I still have some hope for my lifetime, if not much farther than that, because I know there are good kids too; they just don't get my attention on a daily basis the way the rotten kids do. And as some of my coworkers have pointed out, the bad kids we get in the library are not the really
bad kids--those are out on the street getting in trouble with the law, not just ticking off the librarians with exuberant behavior.
But I'm glad I normally don't see much of them. On a normal day during the school year they come in around three and I leave around five, so we don't overlap very much.

Maybe you should buckle that sword and scabbard around your waist while you're at work? You could threated to run the scallywags through instead of merely throwing them out?
@quiltnmomi - I would enjoy that, and it would probably be effective, but I don't think my library director would approve!
My husband the ArmsMerchant asked my son and me if we wanted any of the LOTL swords when he bought a lot to sell. I told him if he still had one of Aragorn's left at the end of the season, I'd take it and try to find room for it somewhere. They're a pretty set of blades, but we have knives and swords everywhere.
I am more confident than otherwise in the future of humanity. Kids I know now are more aware of reality and more concerned for the ecosystem than my generation was. The question is whether they can break the wasteful habits we taught them and undo the damage we've done.
LOTR, of course
@Scriveling - Directors have an apalling lack of imagination.

Love the sword. Yes, I would agree that tormenting librarians is not high on the list of true "bad boy" behavior, lol. I'm sure it's extremely annoying, however.
cool sword
I like to see people hanging out at the library.
What a beautiful sword. Im sure it will look fantastic on your wall. show a pic when you have it hung please.
Nice sword!
I don't have anything like that, just some fake Japanese ones.
I also find it weird that I'm only a few years older than most teenagers and they drive me nuts. Then again, teens drove me nuts when I was one too.
Whoa... very cool.
What a totally cool and kick ass sword to have! I love the character and that great line," I am no man!" How cool are you? (Wicked Cool!) Blessings abound
