  • In what ways are you similar to your mother?

I look just like her, for a start.  A friend of my parents once stopped by the house, up in Colorado when we were spending the whole summer there, and remarked to them that they could never disown me; I look too much like them both.  It was pretty startling to see me, my sister, and our mother in a row, the family resemblance was so strong.  These days my sister says she thinks she looks more like our grandma, Mom's mother, while I look more like Mom; she may be right.

I enjoy some of the same hobbies that Mom did, largely because she taught them to me: reading and needlepoint.  She may have been the one who showed me how to knit, too.  I learned to read when I was four or so because Mom was willing to read the same book to me over and over (The Mouse and the Motorcycle, by Beverly Cleary), and point to the words as she said them.

My sense of humor is partly hers as well, though I've also got Dad's knack for dry, wry, snarky remarks.  Mom's humor was goofier, and you only have to see me at a Weird Al concert to know I got that side of it.

It's been three and a half years now since Mom passed away.  Mother's Day has been hard for me since then, harder than her birthday or the actual anniversary of her death.  But it doesn't seem so bad this year, possibly because it didn't sneak up on me this time; I let myself know it was coming.

I just answered this Featured Question, you can answer it too!

  • I hope that you can spend Mother's Day remembering happy memories with her.

  • This question brought up such a mixed bag response for me that I didn't write simply so I wouldn't go there.   I'm glad that you have such nice memories of your mother. You honor her memory with your writing. Blessings abound

  • I got my mom a flower and she was shocked. I have more of my mom's personality (I'm more outgoing than she is though) but I look like my dad's side of the family. Not specifically like my dad, but his side of the family.
