First of all, check out Rob's post, here. As Melissa would say, "MAD PROPS!" lol That was great, Rob.
On another note, I got another letter from one of the Soldiers today!!! Well, technically an Airman. (...Airwoman?) This was one where getting "girl stuff" was important to them because they just didn't get any. So that's what I sent. Here it is, exactly as written:
Dear Bethany, 21 Feb 05
Greetings from Afghanistan!! I wanted to thank you very much for the care package you sent. The stationary, cookies, and all the girl stuff were all greatly appreciated. It is always nice to know that people back home are thinking about us and support those of us serving over here.
I thought you might want to know what we do here CFC-A, which stands for Combined Forces Command - Afghanistan. Our main job is to bring all the different nations and brances of service (I.e. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines) together to rebuild the Nation of Afghanistan. There are schools and hospitals being built, the country just inaugurated their first publicly elected president and will be voting for their parliament in the spring. Almost 80% of the population came out to vote, this was the first time women were allowed to vote in the country, and girls are going to schools regularly, which was illegal under the Taliban.
Most of us serving here would like to be able to come back in the future as tourists; this is an amazingly beautiful country. From the news, I expected to see nothing besides desert and rocks. There are beautiful snow capped mountains that we can see from the main pathway through the base. First thing in the morning, it's a sight to be seen.
I wanted to thank you again for your support. You should be very proud of yourself; it takes great initiative to get a group of people to complete a project!! Please thank your church members for us also! You were right your package did brighten our day!!
All of us here thank you again for everything, not just the box of goodies (although we really loved that), but for thinking of us.
Sincerely, Ssgt Leea Scott, U.S. Air Force CFC-A/ CJ2
That was awesome! I LOVE getting those! This was an actual snail mail letter. When Dan replied, it was e-mail.
That description of the snow-capped mountains in the morning actually made me want to go to Afghanistan! I love snow. I LOVE mountains.
As for the great initiative to complete a project... eh. I set up a fund that people donate to. Other than that, I'm the one who does all the shopping, packaging, mailing, etc. It's actually easier for me that way. lol. |
