Okay y'all, I need input. I am honestly going absoultely i-n-s-a-n-e (not just insane, but i-n-s-a-n-e. Get that?) because I just want to get this writing course done and over with. I feel like I've been looking forward to it for entire life. I have three exams, and then I'm DONE. All of which I have to write something for. And I've got a dozen or more stories that I've started, but have frozen. I don't know where to go. If I do a short story, then it has to be at least 3,000 words. I get seem to get out the last 2000 or so in a story that I know has potential if I could just keep it going. I'm just stuck. In everything. Great ideas come so easily, I'm just having trouble making them work lately. I'd also like to write a children's story (for that one, if it's a short story, then it only has to be 1,000 words). But I want you guys to help me out. Give me an idea. It doesn't even have to be a full plot (because if you have a detailed plot before you ever start writing, you tend to want to stick exactly to it and that just stifles creativity and makes for a weak, unbelievable story)... or just give me an opening line and I'll go from there. Sometimes the best stories are ones where the writer doesn't even know what is going to happen next. But an opening line has to be an attention grabber. The reader has to be interested enough to keep going. I have a bunch of ideas that I'm trying to make happen, but I always welcome more ideas.

And while I fully expect you all to be goofy and stupid, I'd appreciate some real ideas as well.

Because I am desperately just wanting to finish. I want to move on. I know what I want, and I can't reach for it until this is finished and out of my way.

Snoopy always starts with, "It was a dark and stormy night...."

When Brandon was little, some of the most interesting stories were made up at night when he was going to bed. Instead of reading him a story, I would start with a line, then he'd add a line, I'd add another, and so on, until we had a really weird story. Usually about Tigger, his best friend. The drawback is that they didn't usually make any sense.

Brandon and I wrote a story like that years ago. You might remember the famed Blob from Outer Space. It was awesome.

If I were purchasing children's books... and I saw the "Blob from Outer Space" and a sequel to it... they would probably be sitting on our book shelf at home.
Another book we might be interested in purchasing would be a story about your animals at home. I just read on your mom's Xanga that you have 11 cats.

you have 11 cats.   And 6 dogs (I know this is giving the impression that we own a small zoo.)

how about a horror story in which you have just woken up and found yourself held captive in a cage. the last thing you remember is being in a car wreck with your parents...

Hey, I've started writing one about one of our cats! lol. The one whom (in my opinion) has the most personality... and sometimes multiple ones. lol. It's kind of interesting to do.
I'll have to find The Blob and send it to you!! We wrote it a looooong time ago.

HI LUKE!!!!!!

Hello.  I stumbled across your site from muddsmith's.  I understand your situation.  I am an English major at FSU and have had to be creative in thinking of new stories, as from time to time the perverbeal "writers block" sets in and staring at the computer screen for hours on end is boring - not to mention it's bad for your eyes; or so they say.  (They also say that carrots are good for your eyes, so if you eat carrots while looking at the screen it may counter act the hurting of the eyes?)  I degress...

Here are some settings/ideas, not opening lines but ideas that I have used before:

1)  Two friends are flying on a plane when it starts to drop towards earth.  One of the friends has a dark secret.

2)  A girl sits on a bench with her head in her hands.  On the ground in front of her is a bouquet of flowers.

3)  A young boy watches his parents murdered in a back alley.  He goes into hiding and takes on the persona of a bat...ohh, wait...never mind that one.

4)  A little girl confined to a wheelchair finds an orphaned little pig.
