I'm rereading Seek,Strike, Destroy. It is the history of
the unit my dad served in during WWII. The Tank Destroyer Btlns. are
the forgotten units of the war, but they had more combat time than any
other units in the war because of the way they were utilized. They were
assigned to operate with front line infantry units and when the
infantry was taken off the line for a rest, the TDs were reassigned to
another front line unit. The 894th faced the cream of the Nazi war
machine for almost 2 straight years from the sands of Africa, to the
beaches of Sicily and Anzio, to the mountains of central & northern
Italy, and they did it in poorly armored open turret machines.
They were amazingly ordinary men, who rose to greatness in
extraordinarily harrowing circumstances. These were men who earned their nation's respect and thanks. Their medals were not for scratches, and they didn't throw them away. |
