  • A deep thought provoking topic...

    Voicemail.

I have a love/hate relationship with voicemail.  I love it because it keeps me from HAVING to answer the phone when I don't want to answer it.  I love it because it answers the phone for me when I can't get to it in time.  I love it because you can leave cute and silly messages for other people that you wouldn't leave if they answered the phone directly...case and point, the odds are I will sing a really STUPID Happy Birthday song to you on your voicemail, but I would never sing it if you actually picked up the phone.  Ever.  Not ever.  However. voicemail gives me the freedom to be silly, hang up, and then go about my day.

The downside to voicemail is it is the bane of procransinators.  I have come to discover in my new line of work that there is nothing people hate more than voicemail, because apparently in insurance, everything has to be done RIGHT THIS F-ING SECOND or the world will implode.  Well, let me share a tidbit of information with the RIGHT THIS F-ING SECOND people.  If you wait until the last minute to get something done and you call at LUNCH TIME i.e. between the hours of 11-1pm, you are probably going to get a voicemail.  Guess what I can do about it?  Absolutely nothing.  When this is the case, don't you dare hit that damn button that sends you back to the operator i.e. me and yell at me for "sending you to voicemail".  No dumbass, I didn't SEND you to voicemail, the voicemail answered because the person you waited until the last minute to call is not available RIGHT THIS SECOND.

I would much rather you sing the person you needed to talk to a cute little message.  I bet they will call you back faster and I will be less annoyed with you.

I hate answering the phone.  I only answer when I recognize the number otherwise off to digital recording land with you!

Have you ever wondered about the people who feel it is okay to be completely snotty, arrogant and rude on the phone when you know they would at least try to be a tad polite in person?  Why is that?

My number doesn't come up when I call home, apparently when calling from overseas there are all kinds of crazy routings.  My mom has said some of the area codes that have come up are New Jersey, California, Delaware, Georgia and Wiscosin. She gets a kick out of it but my sis who is one of those won't answer unknown numbers thinks I'm a bill collecter and won't answer unless I call on Sundays.

I have an intense fear/dislike of phone conversations, so I like it when my voicemail helps me avoid them. However, I also hate it because then the ball is in MY court and I have to call back.

I did customer service for 7 years and I don't answer the phone (any of them I have 3) they go to voice mail (2) and answering machine (1) and when people say they can't reach me well, too f**king bad!  I will be reached when I want to be and not a moment before!!!!

This is almost as annoying at people at work who send you an email and then come by 5 minutes later to see if you got the email.
