So lately, I've had my splintered, dysfunctional family on my mind.

Or should I say, I've had 2 members of my family on my mind who, from what I know, were NOT splintered and dysfunctional.....  My grandfathers.

Grandfather #1 (my father's father) was a professional historian.  An expert in French medieval history.  Head of the history department at Princeton University for many years.

Grandfather #2 (my mother's father) was head librarian of the science and technology division of the New York City public library for many years.  He also wrote books on making things with concrete, building outdoor play equipment, and so on.  He farmed after he retired.

What I don't know (because both my parents are deceased) is why BOTH of them ended up moving hundreds of miles away from their respective families, and wanted as little to do with them as possible...

I've been trying for a couple of years to get my mother to write her memoirs, or at least some kind of family history. During the time that she's been "going to do it" her own mother has died and she's now the oldest member of my family. My father is dead also, so once my mother dies all of her knowledge will die too. Questions that my own kids might raise in future will remain unanswered...

Do you think that there's a way to make these blogs permanent and easily locatable so that, in time, later generations may read our accumulated wisdom and understand our lives better ?

Interesting.  Have you called them to ask?

My maternal grandmother's family is a mystery, too.  From what we can gather, her mother was institutionalized.  At that time, it was a tremendous scandal.  My grandmother and her whole family have refused to talk about her mother--ever.  No one can trace anything back any further.  Now my grandmother and most of her relatives are gone.  Sad.

well, if the rest of the family was splintered and dysfunctionsl, it could have been to preserve their sanity. I know that is why my brother moved (I elected to stay and ignore the flakier branches of my family tree)

Your grandparents had really interesting lives.   Both of mine, long gone, were farmers.  Just plain 'ole, poor farmers in Texas. Tough way to make a living.

If the grandfathers are alive, you should call them. If not, you may never have an answer, but at least you CARE enough to ask the question.

Lots of historical information gets lost instead of being passed down from generation to generation. Isn't there anyone (an uncle or aunt?) you can ask?
