my favorite prediction about the future was written in 1899.  the writer predicted that by 1999, at the then-current growth rate of the horse population on manhattan, the entire island wood be buried in horse poop!

the following quotes are more 20/20 hindsight...

"Louis Pasteur's theory of germs is ridiculous fiction".

- Pierre Pachet, Professor of Physiology at
Toulouse, 1872

"The abdomen, the chest, and the brain will forever
be shut from the intrusion of the wise and humane surgeon".

- Sir John Eric Ericksen, British surgeon, appointed Surgeon-Extraordinary to Queen Victoria 1873.

"Professor Goddard does not know the relation
between action and reaction and the need to have
something better than a vacuum against which to react.  He seems to lack the basic knowledge ladled out daily in high schools."

- 1921 New York Times editorial about Robert Goddard's revolutionary rocket work.

"If I had thought about it, I wouldn't have done the
experiment. The literature was full of examples that
said you can't do this."

- Spencer Silver on the work that led to the unique
adhesives for 3-M "Post-It" Notepads.

LOL!  I'd be lost without Post-Its, they're the core basis for my filing system

Ironically, I watched "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion" this weekend and the title characters claim to invent Post Its, only to be refuted by a sour classmate...so much Post It history in three days, it's enough to make your head spin.

Haha, nice!  I seem to remember someone saying that TV would never catch on...or that it would only be owned by the rich...or something like that.

Very nice!

What about the guy who worked at the patent office about 100 years ago who said that everything that could be invented had been already and that the patent office was no longer necessary?!?

Or the people about 50 years ago who said no one would ever need a computer in their home?!?

History is filled with short-sighted predictions.

we all need daily reminders like these that "knowledge" is merely relative....

This is very cool stuff.  The one I always think of was about the computer someday weighing as little as a couple of tons and fitting into a single room.  Don't remember where it was from though...

I have often wondered what someone from the past, Like George Washinton or Thomas Jefferson would say if they could have peeked into this century for a day or 2. How fascinated they would be!  Good Blog SO... you always make me think.  Have a fine one.

Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.

LOL at the horse poop prediction.

Who was it who said all that could be invented already had been invented?
