I haven't posted the AWordADay e-mail in awhile...

alembic (uh-LEM-bik) noun...1. An apparatus formerly used in distilling substances...2. Something that refines, purifies, or transforms.

It's also a now-obscure manufacturer of electric bass guitars...

OK, I lied...I just did a search on Google...and alembic is still in business, not only making basses but electric guitars as well...you can go look at http://www.alembic.com/ ........
