27 years, English art-rockers Van der Graaf Generator are back together
again. I haven't heard the new disc, but reviews rank it right up
there with the best they've ever done.
How to explain art-rock? Or VDGG? The BEST way is to listen
to the stuff. Genesis used to be an a-r band, back when Peter
Gabriel was still with them. They were even on the same label as
VDGG.
Art-rock mixes classical, jazz, AND rock. Compositions tend to be
lengthy. The WORST of it's pretentious noodling. The BEST
takes you away into another zone....
Johnny Rotten likes VDGG. It's those gloom and doom lyrics, backed/capped by flawless keyboards, saxes, flutes, guitar...
I heard them when I was 16-17. Redbeard in Findlay, Ohio (aka
Doug Hill) played their stuff. That man had more influence on
music I STILL listen to today than almost anyone else. Of course,
WFIN is COUNTRY now.....(blech)....
