How did garter snakes get their name?

I found the answer, CG!...The name "garter" was probably chosen because these snakes, like the fancy garters that once were used to hold up men's socks, have colorful, longitudinal stripes....

I bet that prof would cringe to read that now. Pearl S Buck was rejected numerous times by editors and even told that she'd never make it as a writer. Just imagine.
