  • Thankful Thursday

    TODAY'S QUOTE:

    Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens;
    Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens;
    Brown paper packages tied up with strings;
    These are a few of my favorite things.

    Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels;
    Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles;
    Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings;
    These are a few of my favorite things.

    Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes;
    Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes;
    Silver-white winters that melt into springs;
    These are a few of my favorite things.

    When the dog bites,
    When the bee stings,
    When I'm feeling sad,
    I simply remember my favorite things,
    And then I don't feel so bad.

    ~ Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers

    Featured Grownups' current topic is "I am Happy When."    Since I'm happy when I remember to be thankful, and since I currently joined the Thankful Thursday" meme hosted by Sting My Heart, I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone, (not really, I love birds), and post a list of fifty things I'm thankful for.  My Xanga friend, SimpliciTea also does a Thankful Thursday list, and it inspires me every week.

    I am thankful for:

    1           A big glass of ice water when I'm thirsty.

    2           A church that feels like home, with a pastor who is personal and prays for us.

    3           A faithful husband who is willing to work two jobs to help pay our bills.

    4           A full night's sleep.

    5           A great arts program at the local community college, and discount tickets because my daugter is a student.

    6           A great barbeque restaurant within walking distance of home that's willing to employ two of my teenagers.

    7           A knock-you-down bear hug from my seven year old neice.

    8           A new game for family night called "telephone pictionary" that I learned from my Xanga friend, Mamaglop.

    9           A pot of hot stew on the stove, and the yummy smell wafting through the house.

    10         A stack of books waiting to be read on my bedside table, and a bookcase full of old favorites in my library.

    11         A world-wide community of bloggers who are funny, smart, and my friends!

    12         Amazing jazz from Chris Botti's trumpet.

    13         Beaded book marks.

    14         Candles burning all over the house.

    15         Christian Women Online Magazine.

    16         Dove dark chocolate.

    17         Fresh cut flowers in a winter wonderland.

    18         Fresh vegetables.

    19         Hearing my almost eighty-year-old grandfather tell stories from his life before I was born.

    20         Inspiring poetry from my friend a_wrinkle_in_rhyme.

    21         My Bible.

    22         My favorite comfy pair of blue jeans.

    23         My leather coat.

    24         My mother, my hero, my friend.

    25         My new bathrobe as I step out of the shower.

    26         My new ScanDisk Sansa MP3 Player

    27         New sharpened pencils and a fresh journal.

    28         Photographs.

    29         Red chotchkies.

    30         Rogers and Hammerstein musicals on DVD.

    31         Sitting in front of the fireplace in my den with chocolate brown walls and laminate flooring we did ourselves.

    32         The chance to parent and homeschool my 16 year old step-son for at least a year, maybe longer.

    33         The ocean.

    34         The privelege of being a "billboard of mercy".

    35         The privelege of spending each day in my own home, educating with my children.

    36         The sound of thunder rolling across the sky.

    37         The tick of analog clocks.

    38         The way my husband whispers against my neck.

    39         The way my oldest son hugs me every day when he comes in from work.

    40         The wedding ring quilt on my bed that my husband bought on our honeymoon.

    41         Three australian shepherd dogs who lay at my feet, when I let them in the house.

    42         Three cats who love to use my lap, keyboard, book, or feet as their beds for a little nap.

    43         TiVo and fast-forwarading through commercials.

    44         Two daily cups of hot tea.

    45         Vacation with extended family in Durango Colorado.

    46         Waking up knowing my day is in the hands of Someone who can handle it so much better than I can.

    47         Weekly family nights with all of my children and my husband.

    48         When my husband calls me every day on his lunch hour and when he's heading home from work.

    49         When my nineteen year-old daughter sits on the foot of my bed at night and tells me all about her day.

    50         When my sixteen-year-old daughter calls me mommy.

    What favorite things are you thankful for?

    ryc: hope you didn't catch my most recent poem until I had corrected the glaring typo I found in it today...enthrall spelled "entrall"...yeesh!

    I am thankful for monetary resources. I grew up precariously poor, and although we're not anywhere close to being rich, I am humbly thankful that the stress of money problems has been removed (for now) from our lives.

    I am thankful that God gifted me with an even-tempered mate, and two smart (mostly) sensible daughters.

    ~M.E.

    re your comment: it took a full week at Christmas for the stress to leave her face, and it came back in anticipation two days before she left to return to school. Good thing she has only two semesters left....  I'm a book addict - and have 7 cases to keep clean - although those three are the worst because they hold more than just books.

    mommy? I don't call you mommy...
    I call you mommie! either that or momma ;)
    <3 you.
  • TaunaLen
    Mommy, Mommie -- you know, they sound strangely the same. :)

    Good list, and I'm glad you mentioned the Aussies. :) My husband's father raised Aussies when he was still alive, so my husband grew up with the love of a pack of Aussies.

    Lovely list!  I'm jealous--you write a wonderful list, in a format that is easy to read.  I write my lists and go on and on and on!!! :)  Oh, what beautiful words by the masters--Rodgers and Hammerstein--mmmmm.  They just don't write like that anymore, do they?

    Loved your post a couple days ago too.  So beautifully written and poetically expressed.  It was wonderful to see some posts from you in my subs.  Hope that all is going well, my friend!

    Blessings to you and your family, Tea

    Love you Mama.

    I'll always give you a hug when i come in from work, then when I visit, after I am gone, too.
  • Brunhilda
    thank you for posting that--it sounds like you have a fine family.

    I'm making up my own list as I read these.

    I'd love to see Drakonskyr post HIS list on this.  I doubt it would resemble yours or mine.  (Haven't posted mine yet.)

  • mamaglop

    That was a great list, I really enjoyed going through it and being reminded of the many things I take for granted, the tick of an analog clock, for instance. One thing I don't take for granted is Dove dark chocolate.  You mention two sharpened pencils and a fresh journal.  My chicken scratches are hard for even me to read once I've written something down, and I was curious about your handwriting, do you actually like to handwrite things? Two more questions:  What is a meme? and what are chotchkies?

    Thank you for your very sweet comments.  I'd love to share a pot of tea and a long conversation with you too. I think we could find a lot to talk about,  I think we could be good friends... and I thought your idea of an oniline tea party was WONDERFUL!  Mind if I run with it?   I'm not sure how a person would set it up, but I may try to host one (and I wouldn't have to have a clean house to do it!) Re: that, it's nice to know other women have trouble getting the house clean and decluttered all at one time.  I've learned if I'm to entertain, I must allow my guests to see my house less than perfect, but it still embarrasses me.

  • Krissy_Cole

    What a good list! And you just can't beat dark chocolate although my favorite brand is Ghiradelli.

    mmm mm good!

  • gwennieg
    I liked this list.  Very nice.
  • WakeUpLaughing
    Wonderful list and alot of those make me happy too. Although when my teenage daughter calls me 'mommy' instead of 'mom' it usually means she wants something! LOL!
  • m_elmer_48
    You started with something from "The Sound of Music"...how thoughtful...love your list...Smile
  • Breath_Of_Dawn
    That's one of my favorite songs, My Favorite Things

    Gosh, I have so many things to be thankful for, and I have tried to get into the habit of thanking God for every little one of them. Naturally, I usually fall short. But really, we all have so many things to be thankful for.
