  • A Woman Raping a Man

A woman was accused of raping a man.

    Tanya Hutchison

She has said that the experience has ruined her.  She was 5 foot 1 inch.  He was 6 foot tall.  She is a 42-year-old mother of five.  She was cleared of the charges.

In the article, she told the story about how the police showed up to her house and arrested her in front of her seven-year-old son.  She was not given a chance to explain herself.  She was accused of giving the guy a date-rape drug.  She was taken to the police station and questioned for four hours.

She was forced to tell police the explicit details of the sexual encounter.  They went through her home and took her bedsheets.  They took her underwear for testing.

She was made to feel like a criminal.

She said, "I feel petrified when I hear police sirens and my confidence in the legal process is badly shaken."

The man dropped the allegations.  She has claimed that the relationship was consensual and was a brief affair.  She said she knew he was married but thought he was separated from his wife.  He showed up at her home one day with wine.  She said, "I was taken aback because the wine made it very clear he was there for sex."

She said she couldn't understand why they were taking the man's claim so seriously.

She said the police called her home and told her that the man admitted she was telling the truth.  She was shocked that the accuser was going unpunished for his lies.

She said, "It makes me very angry that he has got off scot-free for making up something so evil about me.  He was not even cautioned for wasting police time and nobody has apologized to me."

The police spokesman said, "We investigated an allegation of sexual assault against Tanya Hutchison but we can confirm there will be no further action taken."  Here is the link:  Link

The thing that sticks out to me about this story is that all of these details happen in reverse for men every day.  They are falsely accused.  They are treated like criminals.  They have to describe sexual experiences that are embarrassing and humiliating.  The police don't believe their story.  We are not supposed to take into consideration whether the woman was cheating on a boyfriend or husband.  The accuser's name is not released to the public.

But the second the same thing happens to a woman, it is a big story and we are supposed to feel bad for the treatment of the woman.

This is the same issue as when a woman teacher rapes an underage student.  We always hear the woman's side of the issue.  We would never hear the man's side of the issue.  If a woman kills her children, we would hear about the depression she was experiencing.  If a woman is falsely accused of a crime, we hear her side of the issue.

Why are men and women treated so differently by the media when it comes to criminal activity?

Just one of those double standards as far as I can tell.

It's a complete double standard... though I don't know why.

    i agree with dangerousdonut

It just made it big because it was more socially unacceptable. Like you said, the reverse happens every day, which makes it not very newsworthy. Newspeople don't look for the everyday things or the disasters that take time to accumulate...

Yeah, double standards. Same reason black people can say "nigger" but I get weird looks when I say it. The world sucks, but laws and our perception of them and how they should be enforced are going to change based on a person's race, gender, wealth, status, etc.

women are perceived to be innocent, soft, and kind; men heartless and guilty.

The media stinks. It chooses who to side, and then go all out for it. And most of the time, the side that the media chooses, is the side that has the best story to tell. Meh.

It is a play on people's past experiences and what fits our preconcieved expectations. The fact of the matter is that most criminals are guys. In most cases, the perpetrator of a sex crime is male. When the media is set to report a case and we, the listner, are confronted with the facts of a new case it is all together natural to retrofit it all based on preconcieved notions. It's simply how our minds works. It's "common sense."

A very damned good question. This is why I have always seemed so harsh on women whenever we have these sorts of cases, like when the woman in the military accused three men of rape but then withdrew the charges. ESPECIALLY when they drop the charges. It's a very malevolent way to ruin someones reputation (or in the Duke case, a great way to ruin a sports team) without having ANY repercussions.

It's like the post you did a year ago when you asked if women are too emotional to be president: people associate women with being emotional and assume its our stupid emotions that cause us to do tragic things.

I think cuz we often see men as in tougher shell as compare we treat women with glass..  I guess more compassion for the woman as we do for the man..   I know it is hyprocrite but it is quite often I see it that way..   But there are some women who can be really more ornery than the man..

I think I'd agree with pretty much everyone's comments thus far. It is such an odd thing to hear an accusation being made of a woman raping a man. Physically speaking, it seems a bit less probable than the reverse. Women are generally smaller-built than average males. It is a double standard. That's pretty much all.
  • Peteismyhero
well, we DO hear about more crimes where men are involved, so maybe that is the case.

I don't know, but I wish it would stop.

I remember when the Trun raped me. No one believes me to this day. I'm numb.

False rape accusations are about power and/or revenge and are a form of rape themselves!  Whether made fasley by a man against a woman, or a woman against a man.  I can understand the need to protect the accusors identity, so that people aren't afraid to come forward in real rape situations.  But it still feels entirely unfair to endulge the name of the accused until they are proven guilty.

I feel sorry for Chris Beniot.  The media is tried to explain his actions, I think.  But I do agree that in most cases you are right.  No one sympathizes with men and even when they are proven innocent, most people still think they did it, and no one is interested in "their side of the story".  It's human nature, I guess.  Woman are viewed as vulnerable and even if they murder or rape children, people are fascinated with knowing why and they blame abusive men and sympathize.  The media plays to the masses, and thats why I never watch the news.

    answer to the question...

because men and women are not equal.

no matter what u say we are not.

  • hello_insanity
Like everyone says, bit of a double standard.
Also, a woman-raping-a-man case is very unusual, I guess they think it makes good news, so they cover it closely. We got the boys' perspective in the Duke case, didn't we?

Crying rape falsely is a douchebag thing to do whether you're male OR female, though. It's pretty screwed up that guy isn't at least getting reprimanded.

I really don't see how saying a mother who killed her children was depressed is sympathetic though, she's still a murderer and I don't think anyone thinks depression exonerates her in anyway... or I hope not, at least.

Whem I look at the media, I picture the target audience.  Obviously, it's women, particularly mothers and especially those in control of the family finances, and by telling the stories that women would be interested in, tugging at their heart strings and emotions, the viewers are sure to stay tuned until after a word from their sponsors.
