Dropout Age
A report was presented in the state of Maryland concerning raising the dropout age to 18.

The current law allow students to dropout at 16 as long as they have the consent of their parents. The report said dropout rates would be reduced if the age was moved to 18. It would cost the state $200 million a year if the age was changed. Here is the link: Link
Do you think students should be required to go to school until they are 18?

Of course dropout rates would be reduced if the age was moved to 18 .. duh? But, I don't agree with changing the law. I think it should stay at 16 with parental consent.
yes!
yup
There's a lot of people I know dropping out at 16, mostly because they are failing out of school anyway, on drugs, having lots of problems at home, etc.
Keeping them in school wouldn't help anything.
Might as well just finish school. It would be an effective law.
They should HAVE to graduate PERIOD!!!!!! No matter how long it takes
People need to duke out high school in the US honestly. There are tons of other school systems all over the world that are a hundred times more rigorous than any high school here. I'd say yes, raise it and have them finish it off.
But...who will make me Taco Bell, and work at the dry-cleaning places?
Yes.. I think education is more important so go for it..
Education is so freakin' important. So of course I am all for making it compulsory for kids to study and then graduate!
To answer the question: no. But I was just saying that it would be an incentive to stay in school.
NO!
Yes, yes, yes, yes, and YES!
Schooled until their 80.... but what do I know, I have an eighth grade education...

Nah. Keep it the way it is.
They should lower the age to 12. Most 5th graders are smarter than adults these days.
No, because most people are graduated BEFORE they turn 18 anyway!
There are a lot of factors to consider with dropouts, sometimes it isn't just laziness. The simple answer is yes, they should stay in school and graduate. Ideally, we all want less dropouts and more 'successful' people to be coming out of high school. As the years have gone on, we've noticed that not everyone is the same. ~gasp~ Really? Yes, really. My younger brother dropped out with my parents permission because the school was refusing to do anything about the bullying he had to endure over his weight (acutal medical glandular problem, he's medicated now). He dropped out and got his GED, he's now going to college and plans on being a cop. So, the not so simple answer is not always. There are mitigating circumstances for some and a justified butt-whooping waiting for others who manipulate the system and give it all a bad name.
~steps off soapbox~
Yes.
No way! By 16, you know whether school is for you or not, and if you can drop out and get a JOB, what's wrong with that?
Oh my gosh. I just can't...ugh.
I freaking hate public school.
No... then they may as well graduate...
I find it so weird that americans arnt as strict on graduating as where I live in canada, even though they have higher expectations (50% is passing here..isnt it like 70% or something in usa?). we also have a law that's like, if you drop out you can't get your licence until you're 18
graduating should be something EVERYONE does, it shouldn't be something just some people do. it should be normal for everyone to graduate, not for kids to drop out before senior year.
Honestly, no one should have the option of dropping out of high school. It's not like it's hard to pass.
