Homosexuality and the Bible
I have put up several Bible verses that people use to indicate that homosexuality is a sin. I had us use a verse before to discuss this issue but I think one verse tends to make the discussion limited.
So I went to a Christian website that clearly stated that homosexuality is a sin and then copied all of the verses that were used. Here are the verses:
"But before they went to bed, the men of the city beset the house both young and old, all the people together. And they called Lot, and said to him: Where are the men that came in to thee at night? bring them out hither that we may know them: Lot went out to them, and shut the door after him, and said: no not so, I beseech you, my brethren, do not commit this evil. I have two daughters who as yet have not known man : I will bring them out to you, and abuse you them as it shall please you, so that you do no evil to these men, because they are come in under the shadow of my roof. But they said: Get thee back thither. And again: Thou camest in, said they, as a, stranger, was it to be a judge? therefore we will afflict thee more than them. And they pressed very violently upon Lot: and they were even at the point of breaking open the doors. And behold the men put out their hand, and drew in Lot unto them, and shut the door: And them that were without, they struck with blindness from the least to the greatest, so that they could not find the door. And they said to Lot: Hast thou here ally of thine? son in law, or sons, or daughters, all that are thine bring them out of this city: For we will destroy this place, because their cry is grown loud before the Lord, who hath sent us to destroy them." (Gen. 19:4 -13)
"We know that the law is good, provided that one uses it as law, with the understanding that law is meant not for a righteous person but for the lawless and the unruly, the godless and the sinful, the unholy and profane, those who kill their fathers or mothers, murders, the unchaste, homosexuals, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound teaching," (1 Tim 1:8-10)
"You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination"(Lev. 18:22)
"If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Lev 20:13)
"Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God."(1 Cor. 6:9-10)
"For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper." (Rom. 1:26-28)
"In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire." (Jude 7)
"And reducing the cities of the Sodomites, and of the Gomorrhites, into ashes, condemned them to be overthrown, making them an example to those that should after act wickedly."(2 Peter 2:6)
Do you think the Bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin?

Well, you have to look at the context....
Hmm, where have I heard that before?
Not just a sin, it's fatal too!
And God is the bringer of death!
Yes the Bible teaches that it is, but we must love the person and hate the sin.
yes. It is one of many sins the Bible informs us about and I think more importantly it tells us why when it tells us something is a sin.
The Bible makes it sound like it's inhuman or something. It bothers me because isn't God the one who is supposed to accept everyone? What is so wrong about someone loving someone the same sex? No one should have any say in who one should love.
Yes it does, so does every major religion in the world, but heaven forbid one should bring it up!
I think people confuse believing homosexual acts to be a sin with being a homophobe (actually hating homosexuals). They are not actually the same thing. I was thinking about writing about it but I need to have a much better grip on the issue than I already have, so I probably won't.
It's none of my business what 2 penguins do behind closed doors.
The context is unambiguous. The passages from Leviticus can be argued to be negated by the new covenant, but the rest are not. However, the Bible also teaches that all have sinned (Rom. 3:23). And ours is not a religion of judgmentalism (the conservative folly) or universal acceptance (the liberal folly) but of redemption.
Yes. It also teaches that many other things are sins and that we are all sinners. But let's not forget that it teaches us as well to love God, love our neighbor, love our enemies... Sometimes I think the church places too much emphasis on the words of Paul and not enough on the words of Christ.
@GodlyWoman83 - Perfect.
@squeakysoul - I agree.
I will leave God to do the judging and love my fellow man, no matter what his sins.
yes it does. It is very clear on the subject
isn't it that working on a sunday is also a sin worthy of death? huh...
something about eating pigs, too, i think....
@qccan - hehe, you are funny
Perhaps. As for how they will be condemned, thats between the sinner and their respective God in any instances.
Sure, I think it teaches that homosexuality is a sin. Do I believe the bible? Nope.
Yes
Yes. Hate the sin, love the sinner.
Yes, I do. But the bible also teaches that making eye contact with a menstruating woman is a sin.
The better question is: Does it matter?
(Hint: No.)
Yup...the Bible speaks very clearly on the subject of homosexuality.
yep, but so is hypocrisy
The problem is that homosexuality isn't just a sin, it's an addiction.
I can't comment authoritatively on this, since there are so many different factors, but one thing I do know is that Jesus certainly would not be carrying around signs that say "God hates fags" on them.
The whole issue saddens me, as many gay people I've met are the nicest, most tender individuals you'll ever meet, and they get nothing from hate from these "Christians" who grossly mis-represent Jesus to them.
Bottom line, I do not believe that people are "born gay" but I do not believe that is is 100% just a moral choice to be gay either.
Do you think the Bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin?
From the quote passages it's more than this: That homosexuals are non-entitites on par with murderers. It seems like the Bible would condone the putting down of homosexuals, and that the Bible would reward the good Christians who removed Mathew Shepard from this world with a happy pat on the back.
Seems pretty clear to me.
