The Tree
For the Lady Songbird's contest.

"Hey man, this way! Hurry up will you."
"I'm coming as fast as I can."
"Shh!"
"You shh!"
"Down! Look. By the rock."
"I don't see anything."
"Right there. . . see? Sniffing around the base of the tree. . .stay down! It'll see you."
"It can't see me, man. Unless it's got eyes looking out its asshole."
"Huh?"
"It's just a dog. Butt's in the air."
"Dog? No.. no man it was a guy. . . I saw. . . well I'll be damned it is a dog. Come on. Give me that shovel."
"You are not gonna hit it are you?"
"NO. . . geez. What the hell kind of . . . I do NOT hit dogs with shovels."
"You hit that guard."
"That's different."
"How?"
"He could defend himself."
"He was eighty years old!"
"He had a pistol."
"So, the dog has teeth man. And uh, dude, NOW he's looking at you."
"Shit! RUN."
"No, man I'm tired. You run. I'll watch."
"GET IT OFF ME!"
"I do NOT hit dogs with shovels."
"It's a goddamned wolf!"
"Endangered. . . we're in his territory. You probably had it coming you know."
"HELP!"
"I am helping. Heeeeere puppy, puppy, puppy. Come and get the nice stick. . ."
"AAAAAH"
"Gee, looks like he doesn't want to play, dude. Looks like it's over for you."
"Please. . . why are . . . you . . AAH"
"You shot a guard, man."
"He SHOT ME BACK."
"True. . .true. But only after you hit him. Classic self defense. Oh by the way, that's his dog."
"WHAT?"
"Guarding the path."
"I thought you were my friend!"
"Silly. I'm no one's friend. I'm just the gate keeper."
"I NEED TO GET TO THAT TREE."
"Nope. This is where you stay."
"But the dog . . ."
"Your new eternal playmate."
"WHERE ARE YOU GOING!"
"Back to work dude. There's a long line forming. . . You know what they say. . . Charron's work is never done."
