  • My first entry for the Kween of the Queen's challenge: Defining Who I am

This is in response to the Kween of the Queens writing challenge:

    DEFINE WHO YOU ARE

    Here are your parameters:

This DOES NOT mean what you do for a living, or who you are in your family.  I don't want you to write about being a Father or Mother or Daughter or Son.  In fact, leave your family and your job out of this entirely.  I want you to tell us what makes YOU tick.  How do you see yourself?  Are you talented?  Frustrated?  Happy?  When you think about this definition, think about YOURSELF.  What makes you who you are?  What dreams do you think about?  What does it take to let you feel that you are worthy or good or respected?  Who are you?  Make this your own.  You can write or post pictures or put up your art or poetry, whatever you like!  We love seeing it!

    You have until May 15th.

I started out writing this thinking it would be a relatively easy challenge to start with. It shouldn't be hard to put into words what makes me tick, as I should know that better than anyone else.  However, when I sat down to write I found myself at a loss for words.  It's easy when you can put down a quick definition...wife, mother, friend, graphic artist...but those are merely titles, not what makes me tick.  To give a proper definition of who I am, I have to dig a little deeper, which for me isn't always the easiest thing to do.  The easiest way for me to do this is in list form, so in a nutshell, here are 10 things that define who I am:

    1.  I love to laugh and I'm able to find the humour in almost anything. I love British comedy (Eddie Izzard, Absolutely Fabulous, Monty Python), as well as some American stuff (The Office, The Daily Show, Louis Black).  I don't take myself too seriously, and find that when life gets too overwhelming, laughter will always make things better.

    2.  I can't hide my feelings well.  My husband says my eyes show everything. When I am angry, there is no way to hide how I feel, and if I don't like someone, no matter how hard I try not to show it, they always know.

    3.  I love to change what I look like.  This usually involves messing with my hair and makeup, since those are the easiest things for me to play with.  I've had my hair ultra long as well as had a shaved head.  I've had almost any hair colour you can imagine (including deep purple).  Over the years, and as I've had kids, I've toned it down a bit.  In the past year, however, I've had dark brown (natural colour), black, blue black, auburn, deep red, copper red, and most recently, a strange orangey pink (which was a mistake and I had to cut off...oops.)

    4.  Music is very important to me.  I have always been into music, from the time I was 5 and saw The Monkee's re-runs on television.  My parents always had music playing in the house when we were growing up, and I have continued that tradition with my family.  Music inspires me to be creative, and it lifts my spirits when I'm down.  Like humour, I can't imagine life without music.

    5. I'm kind of a tom-boy.  I like being outdoors, hiking, playing soft-ball, horseback riding and throwing around a football.

    6. I like to create things, whether it's a poem, a piece of digital art, taking a photograph or writing a short story.  I think that's why I love Xanga so much...it's not only a great place to make friends, but also to be creative.

    7. I'm open minded.  I don't think it's anyone's right to judge another person, and I believe all people should be treated with respect.  I don't understand cruelty or when one group of people judges themselves as better than others for whatever reason. That kind of thinking tends to piss me off.

    8. Ice cream is my favourite food.  I could eat it morning, noon, and night...but I don't, because I'm a mom and have to set a good example. Darn it.

    9.  I love science fiction, fantasy, horror and the paranormal.  I love watching The X-Files, Dr. Who, Torchwood, Ghost Hunters, etc., and read books on the subjects as well.  I am inspired by the stars and the possibility of other worlds, and much of my writing and art reflect that.

    10.  And last, but not least, I'm weird.  I used to try to hide this fact and "fit in" with the "normal" people, but they caught on pretty quickly that something was a bit off with me.  That's OK though. I find that there are a lot of weird people like me out there, and they are the most fun to hang around with!

So there you have it, my definition of who I am.
