So, I'm on my way from Montreal to Edmonton for a gig and I score a
seat right behind first class, which means I get an extra wide seat
with one of those fancy new screens right in front of me. The
shallow fluff that I wanted to watch (The Devil Wears Prada), was
unavailable, so to be cool and hip, I chose a foreign film
instead.......
I think it was a God thing....
I chose the film "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days". It's a
film about a student who stood up against Hitler's tyranny and paid
with her life, and in doing so, left a legacy of Christian
justice and truth. The scene in the movie that got me the most (I'm a
wreck....crying like a baby...how embarrassing!), was the scene where
Sophie meets her parents for the last time after she's been convicted
of high treason against Germany and she's about to be executed.
She goes into this room where her parents are waiting and her dad hugs
her and tells her how proud he is of her and that she did the right
thing, and then her mom, grabs her hands, looks her in the eyes and
says "Sophie, remember Jesus". And Sophie replies "Mother,
remember Jesus". She's then, at 22 years old, taken to the
guillotine and executed for simply handing out leaflets, encouraging
youth to stand up against Hitler's insanity.
Could I do it?....In the face of death, could I stand up for
righteousness? I hope so...I think so, but I pray, even now, as
we watch the world spiral into chaos and maybe global war, that my
Father, will say at the end of this, "Well done, faithful
servant".
I know that's what He said to Sophie Scholl.
