Home?

School starts tomorrow. I just got a bunch of teacher stuff out of storage yesterday so I'll spend this week decorating my classroom. I have it ready for the kids, but I like to go supernutty creating a unique and enjoyable room.

So I am planning to move to my own apartment in three to four weeks. Great but I haven't found where I want to live. Well ok I did find where I want to live but I don't want to pay over 700 for it.

I'm finding that the Houston rental market really is pretty comparable to Austin which is ok since I will make a lot more here and can afford something nice.

I found these apartments that are built next to the new Cinco Ranch town center or "Centerra" (click for link).

I know it's super cheesy when they make fake downtowns on the edges of suburbia. This one isn't quite as fake as Sugar Land's town center which features a newly built "historic" city hall. The one in Cinco Ranch has a few fake historical buildings, but it's really a nice walkable shopping area around a lake.

I walked around it a little and pictured myself taking an evening walk with my ipod, stopping at Jamba Juice or Starbuck's or Smoothie King for something cold and window shopping then walking back to my apartment.

The image “http://www.page-partners.com/flyers/flyerimages/cincoranch1.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

It's all so picturesque but I don't know how much those apartments cost and if they're over 800 then I won't do it....probably

I know it's not the most liberal of places but I like Texas Suburbia. I'm finding Houston a little scarier than before I left. Maybe it's the growth of the hood (not just Katrina evacuees), or maybe I've just been in an Austin bubble for too long. All I know is I would be an hour from downtown Houston and two hours from downtown Austin... where to party? :)

Wow, that looks like such a nice place to live!  Hope you find a good place that you really like.

RYC: I think you asked how far Ocean City was. (I can't remember, I saw your comment about an hour ago!)  My brother lives about 5 hours by car from us, and Ocean City was about 3 hours from there.  I don't know if it would be a full 8 hours if we drove there directly, or if it would be quicker.  It was such a good trip!

With the gentrification of the forth, fifth and sixth wards, (as well as much of midtown) the drug traffic has been pushed into Montrose around the bars, and it's upsetting.  There's always got to be a bad part of town, and if you redevelop and put 700,000 dollar condos in place of a crackhouse row, then it has to move somewhere.  Of course, it's difficult, because I don't want those nasty townhouse condos all over Montrose (the old places are charming) but redevelopment does indeed save a neighborhood.  Throw in the unwillingness of the major bar owners to remodel or update or maintain their very very lucrative businesses (I'm always suprised to see a LIGHT BULB get changed at JR's) then you have urban blight.  Sad, huh?

I sorta like the whole fake historical thing...I don't know...I'm a person of extremes...I like really old homes and really new ones...

RYC:  the second coffee cup thing rang really loudly for me as well...it made me think about past relationships etc.   Sorry to hear things are petering out with the man...
