  • A Tearful Tribute

Yesterday the world lost a great man and I lost a great friend. No, he wasn’t in the national news, in politics or sports. And a great many in the world had never heard of him. But a wide circle of friends are sad for his leaving. He inspired us and encouraged us with a quiet but forceful word, a photo or even a funny poem.

I “met” him a few years ago when I joined a blog ring called Autumn Leaves and found his blog, The Wandering Jew. Through emails, a close knit message board and his comments on my writing, I grew to know and love him. He even sent me cards and letters with photos of himself and his wife, Heather and other family members through the years.

Whenever I was down, I could always depend on him for a soft word, a tender sentiment. The first time he addressed me as “Milady”, I knew I had met a man who embodied the word “gentleman” in the highest sense of the word. No knight of the round table could have been more polite, more caring of my feelings than he was.

My regret is that I never met him face to face, but we had something that kept us friends for several years.

I hope his writings stay up on the web for a long time so that the world is able read them. You can find them here. http://bastion.diaryland.com/   He kept another site about his dream to live up in the high plains, but I can’t find it. I really don’t think he would have taken it down, but maybe he did. It was called the Overlook or something like that.   Maybe one of my readers can find it for me.

  • Monday

Listen to Miss Etta.    A song to sooth jangled nerves and make anyone feel both blue and elated at the same time.

We had our weekly Sunday power outage (two Sunday's in a row!!) but it waited till this afternoon.   The power stayed off for a little more than 3 hours, but more than once, Gordon wanted to go to a motel where he could be cool.   He is having a really bad day painwise and this was just like (melted) icing on a very bad cake.   I didn't really mind it so much, but than I am not sick the way he is.   I took my shower, read the AARP magazine sitting out on the patio with  a nice breeze keeping me cool.  Well, not cool, but a little cooler than inside the house.   We opened all the windows of course, but that didn't do a lot of good tempwise.

I called Entergy and was told the power would be restored in an hour or so.   Of course it was a machine so what did it know?    I called when the hour was up only to be told, (same machine) another hour and a half.    This happened three times, each time the time was extended.    Liar, liar, pants on fire.

We had had a little shower earlier, but according to another lying machine, our outage was caused by lightening.    I called customer service to see if we would be reimbursed for the accumulated hours with no power and she assured me that when we didn't have power, we weren't being charged.   You believe that?   I can never make head nor tale of the bill with all it's fees, surcharges and such.    I would go ask someone at the local office to explain it to me, but alas, we have no local office.   We have to pay our bill at the places around town, like the grocery stores, pay on line or mail it in.   The machines there don't know what cash is.

We had a strange supper.   Gordon had bread and butter foldover sandwiches, ice cream and crackers.    I had a slice of bread with peanut butter and sugar free jelly on it, and leftover popcorn.  Oh and three tasty little Russell Stover chocolate caramel candies, sugar free, of course.   And just now as the power came on, Gordon asked me to scramble him an egg too.   If I get hungry later on, I will find something to eat, but hopefully I can get through the evening without anything more.

Now the power is on and everything is buzzing around here.   Jack Palance is featured on the movie channel, and my two fans and the computer are going full blast.   I am settled in for an evening of leisure and a semi early bedtime.    I had a nap, I dunno how long, but I slept hard and even dreamed.

I've been really sleepy lately.   I have taken Neurontin for years and it has never made me sleepy, but could something in my system changed and so now it is affecting me that way?    It may have something to do with the charley horses that keep me up every night and never let me get an uninterrupted night's sleep.  Last night I drank the tonic water and took the Benadryl too and was only awakened once.    Gordon had to wake me around 8, so something knocked me out for about 9 hours.  And still I felt the need for a nap this afternoon.

So, we had rain and  an outage and we struggled through it all without any damage as far as I am concerned.   I sure am glad we didn't go to a motel like Gordon wanted to do the minute the power went out.    I like the beds and the TV at a motel, but we never rest good in them now.   Gordon fidgets and keeps me awake and I snore and wake him.   What a pair we are.

There is the cost too.   Last time it was $88 plus their soft drink machine took my money and didn't give me a drink.    I love to stay in motels if we are on a road trip.    We stop at the end of the day, tired from driving, take long showers and then relax in bed and sleep.   Or if the hotel has a casino on the bottom floor, that's ok too.    I don't spend much time in the hotel rooms there.    I don't come up till I am bone tired or have run out of money, or both.

But, as it is, we will spend our night here at home as usual, snug in our own beds. fans and a/c keeping us comfy.    I hope your week is starting out well and will continue without out too many botherations.

  • Checking in on Sunday evening

You know the little grill I posted on the last entry?  Cute little thing, right?  We haven't used it yet and let my tell you something about it.   It came in a pretty box with instructions and all in a couple of languages, but when I opened the box there was the grill and another box with parts in it!    Lots of parts.    It took me quite a while to put this little wonder together.  I had to attach the feet and the handles, and hardest of all was securing the heating element.    I am not the least mechanically inclined.  I mean I can cook on it, but not build it!

I plan to try it out tomorrow with something simple like wieners and hamburger patties.

Our Sunday was the usual quiet sort, except that after waking with the worst cramp up my foot and leg ever, I had to dress and go get potatoes.   I had plans for Swiss steak and that calls for mashed potatoes, so that's what I did.    I picked up fresh green green beans to round out the meal.   It was all good, and for supper I just made myself a steak sandwich using a yummy whole wheat hamburger bun.  There is just about enough for Gordon's lunch tomorrow left over.

My foot is much better.    I will have to stay out of the pool for the rest of the week just as a precaution because believe me, I don't want a foot ulcer to form and make for a really bad situation.

I won't bore you with more medical issues.    Dontcha hate it when you see someone out shopping or at church and you say "How are you?" and they really tell you?     I know people like that that really unload on you when they take this pleasant greeting at face value.   I don't want to be that sort of person.   It's kind of hard not to do that when it seems our life is pills, potions and doctors.

It's been cooler than usual here, only in the low 80s the whole day.    It's about 82 now and very pleasant.   Of course the humidity is pretty high, but that's OK with me.   All the weather news seems to be concentrated with tropical storm Fay.   I feel so sorry for the people who live in her way.    She's not a hurricane, but still it could get bad for them.

All in all, the day has been a pretty good one.  Oh, and I cleaned the house yesterday, even the ceiling fan in the kitchen.   It was awful.   Now it's shiny white.   I am sore from crawling around to clean the tile floors, but heck, that's expected for me.    And I won't have to clean much in the next few days.

The music is an original song by one of Gordon's cousin's husband.   He plays the steel drums and has his own band, the Islanders.    http://www.tropicalband.com/homepage.html   It's an afterthought, but he does need to have the credit for the song, right?

  • Middle of the month

What we did today.   We soaked our feet, and took our antibiotics along with various and sundry other medications.  Gordon was in pretty bad pain nearly the whole day.   He needs to see the pain management doc, but can't seem to shake the other maladies, like his earache to be able to feel up to another doctor.   Now he has the toe to get over.    If it was me, I'd be at all the doctors on the same day demanding they treat whatever part of me was their domain.    Anyway, he got his eardrops 4 times as usual.

I went to good ol' Walgreen's for the antibiotics, and the PO, of course.   Got our copy of Texas Highways.   I almost cried when I looked at all the beautiful places we never seemed to be able to visit.   Palo Duro Canyon, the Big Bend area, Caddo Lake.   We have seen Padre Island and practically live in the Big Thicket area.    Texas is such a big place, there are just too many places to see.

    We had this for supper.

RightBeforeSupper Here it is on the stove right before I put it on the table.    Smothered chicken with gravy, white rice, canned beets with a pat of Smart Balance and a fried yellow squash, cut into slices and coated with egg and milk and dipped in flour.   It was all good and Gordon will have leftovers for his lunch tomorrow.  Of course, we ate all the squash but that doesn't warm over very well anyway.    I might have some of the rice tomorrow morning with an eggs.

I didn't get a blamed thing done in the house in the way of cleaning.    The kitchen floor is gross!   I simply will have to clean it tomorrow.   I spent my "spare" time assembling the little electric grill I ordered from Walmart.  I don't know that it will really suit us, but I had to give it a try for $30.

    elecgrill Whatcha think??

  • I have an infected callous on my foot and the beginning of an ulcer,  and Gordon has an ingrown toenail.   We both got antibiotic shots and also prescriptions for oral antibiotic.   And we have to both soak our feet in very hot Epsom salts water a couple of times a day.   After a week, I will have to wear some patches that have acid in them to eat away the callous.    And probably Gordon will have to have his toenail removed.     Ugh!

What a pair we are!   I told the Doctor we were break dancing and stepped on each other's feet.

I put half a rack of baby back ribs in the crock pot for Gordon and cooked a couple of Italian sausage for me when we got home.   I  boiled potatoes and dressed up pork and beans for him and steamed squash for me.

We were both very tired after the doc visit.   The heat is just oppressive and Gordon had already had  a shower earlier so he was already tired from that.     What I really wanted to do when we got home was go straight to bed but I had to cook something for supper.   Gordon chose the crock pot ribs because he said he thought that was simple, but then he wanted potatoes and beans too.  The only way it would have been simple was to put it all in the crock pot.  As it is, it is a regular meal, but at least he will have leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

I will have to go to Walgreens to get our antibiotics tomorrow morning, leave the scrips to be filled then come home and do something around here and go back after 10 to check the PO box.    I went to Walmart  this morning to get a couple of things and pick up the electric grill.   I have to put some handles and legs on it but otherwise it looks pretty good.    I haven't read the directions yet, but they even put a little phillips screwdriver in it with all the appropriate screws and wing nuts.    I don't think I will have any trouble doing it.  Just not today.   I am super tired.   I had a bad night, probably worried about my foot.

We have to go back and see Dr. P in a week.   OH joy.    Doctor appts seem to never end.

Here it is only 8:30 and I am ready for bed.  I just took a shower with that wonderful hot water again.   I appreciate it so much after a month without it.   Of course I only use a little to take the chill off the shower, but at least I have that and not stone cold water.

So now I will shut this down, put out the kitties and hit the sack.   I am determined to get a good night's sleep tonight and I pray that Gordon does too.  His toe, ear and butt all hurt tonight.    Plus he is worried about me.

I hope you all sleep well, friends and please don't hesitate to go over to the Beacon Light, my other site  www.xanga.com/avasouth     It's more of a fantasy, poetry, day dream site and you might enjoy it.
