   Yet Another Reason To Homeschool!

I know some of you are just tired about my homeschool rants here but...here...we...go...again!

I spoke to a friend of mine last night. We'll call him D for this story. D was having a panic attack. D was becoming hysterical. D wanted to crawl in a hole and disappear.

D has a degree in counseling but couldn't get a job within his degree(as usual). So he applied for teaching positions and during the summer took courses so he could be certified as a teacher. Really good idea...in theory. When I was getting my secondary education degree, we had to take courses during my senior year to prepare us for the classroom. We even did an internship in that same year to prepare us for the little urchins. D wasn't so lucky.

He had a Freshman English teaching position at an Irving,Texas high school(you know, home of the Dallas Cowboys). This was his first full week of school.

His class is filled with kids that cannot read, kids that don't speak English, head bangers(his words not mine) and 19 yr old 'Freshman"(he has 4) and generally kids that have no intention of passing and don't really care if they do.

On the 2nd day, D found one of his students sleeping. He told him to sit up several times and the last time he did, the student shot him the 'bird'. D went up to the student and asked for his papered school ID. The student refused. D demanded it. The student took it but held over his own head and back away from D so that he couldn't take it, " I wouldn't do that if I were you."

D finally snatched it and began walking back to his desk while telling the student to get his things because he was sending him to the principal's office. The student replied, "F**k you m***erf**ker, I'm going to cap your **s!"

THE 14-YR-OLD KID THREATENED TO SHOOT HIM!

What was the school's stance since Texas has this zero tolerance policy?

20 days at an alternative school and he'll be returned!

D's superior was pretty nonplussed about the threat of bodily harm. D's mentor assured him that it couldn't happen there. There are no metal detectors in this school. What's going to stop this kid from walking in with a gun?!

Now my friend is having major anxiety attacks to the point that he is on medication.

And to think this was just the 2nd day....just think what the rest of the school year is going to be like.

Just another notch in the belt of the pro-homeschool side. And my kids get in trouble for not saying "Yes Ma'am" and "No Ma'am".

I have several friends who have homeschooled. I can handle 22 kindergarteners but I don't know if I could have done 5 different grade levels at once which I would have had to do. More power to you; I think it's wonderful! RYC: When my oldest graduates from college he's planning to head off to NYC! That's a long way from Houston!

And people wonder why I never wanted to be a teacher...especially a high school teacher.

I tried to talk my daughter into either being home schooled or going to virtual school but someone in my sister's family convinced her she won't be able to go to a good college and that I am not smart enough to teach her.

wow ... that's unbelievable and unacceptable for our public schools.

On one hand, i totally understand why anecdotes like this are complete motivation for home schooling ... but on the other hand, I feel like it's even more important for communities and government and such to fix the problems of public schooling rather than more people just turning to other options and the nation complacently leaving plenty of children behind

One can't be faint of heart when dealing with teenagers, that is for sure.  I deal with those same kids (and worse) every day... it's not easy, but it can be done.  It takes alot of work and no fear, cuz kids like that can smell fear a mile away and they will eat you up.

I feel bad for your friend... but bad for the students as well.  If they're freshman and can't read... they've been failed.  Probably repeatedly, probably by most every adult that's ever been in their life.

I hope your friend finds a way to connect with these kids... it'll be alot easier on them all if he does.

I second that^^^^^ about having no fear... he willget farther with the kids if they don't think he is afraid of them... it is a bad situation, but I am feeling bad for the kids too... they have been shuffled around and not taught and probably heard that they are hopeless from every adult in their lives... where are they supposed to find motivation?

Ahhh a fellow homeschooler! I agree. I also agree with everyone else -- feel bad for the kids and your friend. But can't agree that means I should leave my children in that situation, when I have some choice. As a fellow teacher I can also relate to the anxiety -- but I don't WANT to teach above 6th grade -- for that very reason!
