Tomorrow we are headed to Chicago for a few days. It will be our only family vacation since everyone scatters next week. Why Chicago? Because April has never been there. Her idea. I took Alex there the last year Michael Jordan played for the Bulls. We had been given tickets for a game so we went up and enjoyed the city one Saturday and then went to the game that night. Unfortunately, Alex was sick and we had to leave after the first quarter. I remember it vividly because he was so ill he couldn't walk and I had to carry him over a mile to the car. The temperature was below zero with a rather stiff wind. That's what dads are for!

Tomorrow it will be 90 degrees so I see no chance of freezing!

I have been reading 1776 by David McCullough. It just came out a couple of weeks ago. I know it is a history book but it reads like a novel. It is actually the number one book on the New York Times bestseller list.

How George Washington and the other leaders turned a ragtag group of farmers, merchants and lawyers (!) into a force that defeated the British is an incredible story. It shows the importance of decisive leadership and a clear mission. Good lessons for the day.

I'm also reading Magical Mystery Tours by Tony Bramwell. He was a close friend of the Beatles before and after they were fab. Lots of interesting inside stories.

Anybody reading a something now that is worthwhile?

Blessings!!!!!

If you count sci-fi as worthwhile, then yes. I've been on a bit of a binge lately, eating up everything from Asimov to Card to Silverberg and several others. I'm currently in the middle of the first Foreigner trilogy by C.J. Cherryh. Definitely an interesting read.

Watership Down by Richard Adams was recommended by a co-worker of mine.  I didn't think a story about rabbits would be that interesting, but it's been pretty good so far.

OH. Chicago is the best city in the world! If you have never, you must visit Gino's East of Chicago for the best pizza in the world!
633 N. Wells Ave. It's on the corner of Wells and Ontario. Also, right across the street is Ed Debevics (sp?), which is an excellent diner with a unique dining experience. The wait staff are all actors who are paid to be rude to the customers, which is absolutely hilarious.

Rainforest Café is also excellent

So far I have really enjoyed the book that I am reading right now, entitled "The Ishbane Conspiracy"  by Randy Alcorn and his two daughters.  This book is really unique in that it has a captivating story intertwined with letters from "Head" demon (Ishabane) and "Peon" demon (Lord Falgron).  The letters are of  approval or disproval of how effective Lord Falgron is in causing the main charcters to stumble and destroy the reputation and ministry of the enemy (Christ).  It is obviously a fiction story but the events very well could happen and might be.  The spiritual messages that Randy Alcorn incorporates into his fiction novels are incredible.  You should read one of them sometime.  One of my particular favorites that you might be interested in with you going to China last year is "Safely Home" which is about the persucuted church in China.  The interaction of the two main charchters and how much one of them is willing to be tortured for the name of the Lord is extremely humbling!  Anyways, this is long enough.... but i am excited about this author and want other people to be too!

In His name...

I want to read 1776; it looks good.

Our Father Abraham is a good book on the Hebrew heritage of the Church - something much too neglected by Western Christianity.

Chicago is a wonderful city.  I second a vote for the Rainforest Cafe.

Also, Dominic_ville came across an excellent book that is coming up on my must read list.  I have heard nothing but good things.

I am praying for your school.  I was just at a graduation ceremony (Worthington Christian) the other day and about twelve of the 92 grads were planning on going to Cedarville.  I believe that they have chosen wisely and trust that they will be much, much stronger coming out.

Peace and God bless.

Chicago is a fabulous city, my favorite in fact. I just graduated and wanted to move there, but it turns out that God wanted me in Cincinnati instead. Enjoy your visit and time with the family!

As far as currently reading, I just started reading Dr. Merchant's doctoral dissertation about Spalding Gray and the Myth of Narcissus. I'm going to help her edit it for book publication. I'd recommend reading the book when it comes out (hopefully) sometime next year. I'm also reading Book the Seventh (The Vile Village) in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. The series is quite clever and it tells a good story.

The Pilgrim's Regress, the first book C.S. Lewis wrote after his conversion--a really fascinating approach to Biblical philosophy.

Like J05HUA, I also went to a graduation ceremony at a small Christian h.s. Six out of 23 are headed for Cedarville this fall.

And I can't wait to join them.

I just finished Passion and Purity by Elizabeth Elliot and The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis--- if you're looking for a book that you can finish in a short amount of time-- those are two great ones. I'm also trying to get through a volume of Sherlock Holmes short stories-- but there's only so much of that a person can take! ;)

Have fun in Chicago, Dr. Brown!

If you'll be in Chicago later in the day on Saturday, I'm sure you would find a trip to Pacific Garden Mission's taping of an UNSHACKLED radio broadcast a wonderful experience. Our family was part of the studio audience during our spring break trip. Watching the dramatization of someone's life and conversion experience is a tremendous reminder of God's sovereignty and grace. You can also tour the mission and attend a Saturday evening worship and testimony meeting. Certainly a different look at Chicago...

Have a refreshing trip!
