Getting Grace

When things are not going well, it is a natural tendency of ours to point fingers at others. Whether it be a baseball team that experiences losing for the first time in a long time, or a family that is battling, or a church family that is experiencing frustrations, or business partners losing money. Every little thing gets blown up into a big thing. Everyone has their ledger sheets and microscopes at the ready. Last night, one Atlanta Brave let loose a nasty-sounding comment regarding another player's part in a bad play. It was not a moment of glory for a proud franchise and team.

Relationships can be painful. Even Nick and Jessica got divorced.

It's funny, though. That one play, in one game, of 162 for the whole season. That comment could linger and fester like a cancer. Some are already calling for the speaker to be released from the team. I know that years from now things that seem like big issues will probably be forgotten. But there are some who choose not to forget. The pain is revisited. Pride over how right the comment sounded is the only thing that makes the pain seem worthwhile.

"Love keeps no record of wrongs." - 1 Corinthians 13:6

Understanding God's grace and applying it is one of the hardest things to do in life. We all get grace: God forgives us for our sins in Jesus Christ. But part of getting grace is then understanding how to give it as well. If we do not understand how to give grace, I dare say we may not have really gotten it well the first time. Grace humbles us. Grace teaches us. Grace disciplines us.

We're not done yet. None of us are done growing in grace. May we continue to learn how to dispense grace and not to dispose of it.
