The bettors are downgrading all the poets... why?

old post below the line:
.........................................................................................

Claudio Magris   5/1

Les Murray    6/1

Philip Roth    7/1

Thomas Transtromer    7/1

Adonis   8/1

Amos Oz   10/1

Haruki Murakami   10/1

Hugo Claus     10/1

Joyce Carol Oates   10/1

Ko Un   10/1

I've read snatches of Adonis and of Oates... not enthralled with either of them.  I may or may not have read a collection by Ko Un-- can't find a copy of it, and can't recall exactly which Korean poet the collection was.  I recall it was translated by Ko Un's translator, of whom I'm not particularly fond.  Les Murray strikes me as pretty cool, but I don't really know his work... it is high time a poet won; been eleven years nows since Szymborska.  I think I'd like to see Ko Un take the prize.

One of my favorite feature of words is how they can contain so many meanings. I have an exact picture in my head of what color "salmon" is.

So long as your don't garnish your collar, you're unlikely to be mistaken for a lunch. Unless you're standing next to a live Tyrannosaur, in which case you WILL be lunch, and the mistake was yours.

It appears the bookmakers were wrong... Doris Lessing wasn't in your list of favored candidates.
