more politics

I get campaign emails from Barack Obama.

That's OK-- I asked for them.  I've even given money to his campaign (as well as to others).  But I am getting a little annoyed.  Some day, perhaps, I'll get around to fighting with the powers that be.  In the meantime, I hit 'reply' and sent the following missive to the Obama for President spam filter:

Senator Obama,

I'm glad your momentum in Iowa is real.

But I'm rather upset that you've given up on Florida.  Our presidential primary is coming up on January 29th-- same day as the South Carolina race you've been talking so much about.  And the DNC has pledged to ignore our vote.

This is real disenfranchisement, far more severe than what happened on Election Night 2000, and I'm angry that you're going along with the national party's decision to silence the voice of Florida's voters.

What's the plan?  I'm glad that Iowa likes you, and I hope South Carolina likes you too.  I want to see you in the White House.

I just wish that my vote mattered.

Sincerely,

[me]

Umm, that's what ya'all get for violating party rules.  You know, you could have gone ahead and followed the rules, and then you wouldn't be in this mess.

RYC: Every class we meet, including the first day of class and every test day, we have a Word of the Day, along with definition(s) and a most brief etymology. Last semester all words began with "A;" creatively, all words this semester begin wtih "B." I try to have an even number of nouns vs. all other parts of speech. They tend to grasp nouns better. I also try to have different disciplines represented, especially the sciences, and words from other cultures.

There is an extra credit opportunity that my students have in which they identify, define, and use 30 words of their own selection. But the "official" Words of the Day are given from on high.

sampling of this semester's Words of the Day:

borborygmus
batfish
brindled
bubble-and-squeak
Beaufort scale
baht
bandicoot
bruxism
baldachin
basal
basenji
bauble
bedlam
bifurcate
blather
blue pencil
botonee cross
brackish
bestiary
brindled
brolly
bruxism
bevy

dankster, it was the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature that set the dates for the primaries. Yes, yes, representative democracy and all that, but it ain't like we really had much say.

(and we ain't the only state voting so early... South Carolina's going on the same date and nobody's batting an eye)

Eh, those party rules are stupid, and so is our entire primary system.  Good for you -- and Florida -- for protesting them.
