  • New goals. Time to start running and get back in shape.

My life right now seems mostly about work or relaxing from work.  We have an SAP Go-live coming up on July 1 with an incredible amount of work to do until then, with new development that requires a lot of testing, and very high expectations that we hit a home run with this implementation.  A lot is riding on my shoulders, and my motivation is up, but there are a million details floating around in my head all the time.  On top of that we're planning my father's 80th birthday celebration for mid-June, two weeks before Go-live, and my son has a graduation ceremony on June 6 which is a big deal at his school.  I don't have to do a lot for that except be the encouraging dad, a role I love but one which requires that I keep my focus on the right things.  There's more, but that gives you a small picture.

I went out to buy a couple new shirts Wednesday night.  I constantly put off buying new clothes when I'm at all overweight.  I've wanted to take off 20 pounds for about the the past three years, but I've let things get in the way.  I know I can do it, but it's the doing that has been tough.  So I hated how I felt when I was trying on clothes.  Time for some determination to hit some new goals.

There is a 4-mile run in our city on June 21.  I ran it three years in a row from 2003-2005, with my best time of 29:20 (7:20 per mile pace).  I don;t have to get back to that pace, but I need to get back into shape and I miss the exhilaration of running and being in shape.  I didn't think I could be in the race this year because it's always on Father's Day weekend, which is when we are celebrating my Dad's birthday out of town, but I found out yesterday that the race is a week later, on June 21.  Sooooooo........I'm signing up and starting to train today.  I've been doing cardio semi-regularly, but it's time to step up the pace with some goals.  Starting weight 186.

    Stay tuned.

7:20.  not bad!  my fastest mile was two years ago at 7:11, and i was one of the top in my jogging class.  that means you can have the encouragement that you were running at the pace of a nineteen year old.

@ZerosRequiem - Actually I did a 5K later that same summer in 22:00 flat, which I believe was a 7:00 pace.  Yep, I passed a lot of guys in their 20s, but I couldn't quite catch those high-schoolers on the track teams doing the 4-1/2 and 5-minute miles.  I'll be happy if I could get back to an even 8:00 pace after getting into better condition.  I did a mile this morning without much effort, so the training is getting going.

It's always that first step to lose weight that really is the hardest part. I know I've struggled with weight issues my whole life, and once I finally made the decision, "Hey, I'm losing this friggin' weight," it was simple. You can do it!
