Keeping in Touch - May 3, 2008
May 3, 2008
The days are flying by as we enter into the final 4 weeks of classes. It hardly seems possible that, in such a short time, those seniors whom we have grown to love will be setting out on their own on the path toward their college and career goals.
We have been so busy we have barely had time to catch a breath! The seniors went on their senior trip to Santa Clara, CA and Six Flags Great America and had a great time together. Also that week, 14 students traveled to Portland to hear the former Korean president Kim, Dae-jung (recipient of the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize) speak at the University of Portland about his “Journey of Faith”. We are so blessed to live close enough to Portland that we are able to take advantage of this kind of event and give our students exposure to the great men and women of our age. Last year students were about to participate in a forum where they had the opportunity to listen to Rudy Giuliani, Colin Powell, Robert Schuller, Zig Ziglar and others.
Two Sundays ago, on April 20th, we had the 1st annual CCA IRON CHEF competition. 10 teams went head-to-head in a 2 hour cook-off. Each team was given a 2 burner camp stove, utensils, access to a grill and $100. They had to plan their menu, go to the store, purchase their ingredients and cook a 3-course meal uing the secret ingredient – BANANAS – all in 2 hours! It was a fun and exciting afternoon. Each team did a fantastic job of preparing their meal, but in the end, Team Carrot composed of Young Sun Kwon, Pun Wachirasrisirikul, Ye Seul Lee, Eun Hye Lee and Sun Ah Kim pulled out a win just edging out the staff (Team Tomato) by 8 points. Hopefully, this event will work it’s way into CCA tradition.
Several of our sports’ teams this year earned a listing in the Oregonian/Dairy Farmer’s Academic Allstate Awards. Our cheerleaders, boys’ basketball , girls’ tennis and girls’ track teams all placed in the top ten in the state for their team GPA average. We are so proud of our scholar athletes.
This past week on Thursday night, we also enjoyed a Russian dinner complete with Piroshkys and Borscht. All of the students ate until they were stuffed and even carried “To Go” plates back to their dorms to enjoy later.
Tonight is the annual Junior/Senior banquet. Our juniors and seniors will be all dressed up for their evening of dinner & activities. Tomorrow, the CCA student music group will present their first concert in the CCA chapel. They have been practicing and preparing all year and are looking forward to it.
Next week, all of our spring sports’ teams will travel to their district tournaments and meets – Track to Oakridge, Girls’ Tennis to Sisters, and Boys’ Tennis to Medford.
We’re looking forward to the alumni reunions over Memorial Day weekend. Dr. Dan Johnson, former president of the University of Toledo, will be our Baccalaureate speaker this year. The Baccalaureate service will be Sunday, May 25th at 11:00 AM, Mayfest will be on Friday evening May 30th at 7:00 PM, and the Graduation Ceremony will be on Saturday, May 31st at 10:00 AM.
