| | (this was my midterm for creative writing...)
----------------------
we still say
“when i grow up
i wanna be...”
but we’re 21
wild with lofty ideas
caught
somewhere between
training wheels and mortgages
a mosaic of molting aspirations
peeling back
the layers of dreams to grow into
one
two-dimensional vocation
alone.
you tell us
to choose
careers
and then climb that ladder
forever
but
i never aspired to cling half-heartedly to a luke-warm future and burrow into the niche that
you’ve prepared for me.
you see,
i still want
to fingerpaint
and run around
barefoot
and never settle
for anything less
than to chase joy
with a butterfly net.
you might think the distance between the cloud and my head
keeps
getting
shorter
but i refuse to be jaded with:
monotony
security
repetition.
no
give me a rhythm.
i want passion
with poverty
if that’s the price
of
never growing
up
or
down
but simply
growing
into
me.
