During an interview, a man a few years older than Big Boss came in to apply for a management position in one of Big Boss's companies. This applicant was about 45 years old, was well educated, had a very impressive résumé, a great employment record, was well dressed, and seemed confident and competent. As the interview progressed, this gentleman continually reminded Big Boss that he had gone to a great American state college and had received his MBA from a prestigious university on the East Coast, with honours.

"I am interested in hiring you," said Big Boss, after interviewing him for about an hour,"but why do you want such a high salary?"

Again, the applicant referred back to his impressive education and his work record, saying,"I'm well educated, I have the right job experience, which makes me highly qualified for the job and deserving of the salary."

"I don't disagree," said Big Boss. "But let me ask you this. If you're so well educated and so experienced, why do you need a job and take orders from me? If you're so smart, why do you need a paycheck?"

The applicant was taken back by that question. He stammered a little and then said, "Well everyone needs a job. We all need a paycheck." The room became very quiet as Big Boss let his answer echo in the room.

"I don't need a paycheck," Big Boss said. "If this business folded, I still would never need a paycheck, even though I didn't go to as good a school as you did or receive the academic honors you have.

"There is a reason why I'm sitting at this end of the table, and you at the opposite."

With that, Big Boss picked up the résumé, placed it on top of a pile of other ones, and said, "I'll call you if I'm interested in hiring you." The interview was over.

How would you answer the question if you were the 45-yr-old?

Up until now, there have been familial/personal obligations that have limited my risk tolerance in the past.  Subsequently, my ability to capitalize on potentially lucrative business opportunities and my ability to manufacture them has been limited.  Needless to say, education and experience is the next best alternative to becoming an entrepreneurial goliath.  It also doesn’t hinder the prospect of becoming exceedingly successful.  Intelligence is only part of the answer to being successful.  Success is as much dependant on uncontrolled variables in an environment as it does on one’s skill set and credentials.

(If asked for specific details on what obligations hinder success, say it's a personal/confidential matter that you would rather not discuss.)

I’d also like to add that I enjoy working within a command structure.  Even with my experience, there will always be those exceptional few, not limited by the law of averages, who will supercede me in various respects.  I am referring to extra-ordinary people such as you. The experience I gain from working with the prestigious people will benefit not only me, but the company as well.

I am sitting here, at this end of the table, because I know with absolute certainty that I have the potential to be one of the best.  That potential will be realized by continually working in a competitive environment, learning from the elite, and having the guts to make the big decisions.

I am sitting here at this end because I hope to engage in a mutual relationship with a respectable employer to expedite my growth.  You have as much to gain as a benefactor/employer as I do as a highly experienced (enter job title here).

I gave it my best, coming from a guy who has little aspiration to move beyond the occupation of pan-handling.

I\'ve said it to myself three times now, and there\'s no way it can be
interpreted in a good way.  There\'s no answer that would satisfy this
interviewer -- he obviously has it in for the interviewee.  The
interview ended the moment those questions were asked.

I\'d give him the finger in response.  I wouldn\'t really do that, but
you get the point -- there\'s no real reason to respond an antagonistic
interviewer, it won\'t change his mind, and you\'ll be wasting both time
and effort.

*assumptions: i'm a 45 year old guy who REALLY wants this job, and a
job that is more about managing ppl than technical stuff.

my answer would be geared around "fit". Convincing Big Boss that you
fit in the organization. Technical competence has already been
established through academic records, experience and possibly through
references. Since the 45-year old is granted the interview he has
already made the first cut, and soft skills are seen as more important
than anything else. I'm also assuming that the ppl he interview are
all competent. With that in mind, it's all about feeding him things he
wants to here.

Learn/research about the company culture/vision/mission statement,
this big boss' background (academics, past experiences), and draw upon
your own. Create conversation, small talk would be more important if
it's a small company. It's more important how you handle tough
questions/ambiguity/pressure/problem employees, etc. because it's a
management position. Draw on examples and illustrate using STAR
format.

Find out what kind of leader/manager he wants to hire. Ask questions,
since it doesn't have to be a 1-way interview. After you ask what he
wants, draw upon your own experiences and satisfy all the criteria.

So, my answer would be contingent on the questions i ask, because the
person who asks the questions usually controls the conversation.
That's how i'll approach it.

So enough gibberish. My answer would sound like this.

"Bear in mind, academics can only take a man so far, I want to develop
other skills that can further my career. Soft skills such as
leadership, team work, etc.. i think there's a strong fit here because
of our complementary skills, your soft skills and my technical skills.
Soft skills are underrated in school, which is why you're sitting at
that end of the table and i'm hear looking for a job. Why do you think
i'm here?"

then based on his/her response, you respond back, and hopefully you
show you're a good fit socially as well. You also want to eliminate
wrong assumptions Big Boss has of you. Big Boss has/had wrong
assumptions because he had to ask that question "why do you need a job
and take orders from me?"

hope that all makes sense.

The only reason the boss asked 'why do you need a paycheque' is because if the guy is so smart, by the time he's 45 have saved up or invested enough money to live the rest of his life w/o working again... I like john's first answer, i think it covers all the basics. Education can only take you so far, as can experience... And mehinks the boss (william) just wants to preach the importance of investment (if done correctly) :P

Here's another reason as to why the question was asked:  this final question is the "make or break" question.  If the candidate truly deserved the impressive salary, then he would provide an equally impressive answer.  All other questions posed during the interview was just a formality.

If the job is worth 200k a year, then 45 year old needs to provide a 200k answer to the 100k question, or something like that.

As usual, Master Bob gets the message loud and clear.

I'm no boss, and I did not write this story. I took this passage from one of the "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" series because I found it very educational. I really got me thinking whether our traditional school system has prepared us adequately enough to ensure financially trouble-free lives.

45 year old says, "Because having a high salary job along with my large and reasonably secure passive cash flows does not destablize my financial situation.  If anything, it will support it."
