Conservative minority elected -- hell yeah

Finally, after 12 years -- it's about time.

you never know...
that attack on the embassy was a warning to Canadians to "do the right thing". And from what I hear, PC and USA relations are stronger than Liberal and USA relations.

And then there's, the Mulroney policies...

Harper is not Mulroney; you cannot assume Harper will adopt the same policies as before. Just like you wouldn't assume Paul Martin to be like Jean Chretien (oh did I mention I hate Chretien?). Paul Martin is alright, but it's time to get the corrupt Liberals out.

Stronger relations with the USA is not necessarily a bad thing. Washington has offered to extend its missile shield to protect Canada, and consult Ottawa should a missile transcend Canadian airspace before taking any action. All Canada had to do was to nod and accept the offer with gratitude, yet the Liberals rejected the proposal. Despite anti-US sentiments in Canada, US is our most valuable ally in many ways, be it military or economical. Without American protection, do you really think Canada can withstand foreign invasions, whose possibilities cannot be ignored due to the vast oil reserves out West.

Of course, Canada should not blindly concur with every American policy, and I am grateful that Canadian soldiers weren't dispatched to invade Iraq. But the Feds should approach the issue with an open mind. If cooperation with the American on a certain issue is beneficial to Canadians, they should go for it rather than exacerbating Canada-US relations for short-term political gains.

Yeah, I dont know anything about Harper, and Mulroney has given me a negative impression of conservatives.

Foreign invasions isn't what concerns me. It wouldn't be in the interest of the US for Canada to be invaded unless we were a direct threat to American national security, in which case US would be doing the invading. USA is our strongest ally and I can't forsee Canada destroying that relationship to a great degree.

Terrorist attacks can come in so many forms, and i'm not totally confident Canada has taken the necessary precautions to safegaurd against those threats (even though I dont know what they may be). If Canada, with a PC gov't, is more inclined to support American military campaigns that directly challenge the power of terrorists for no reasonable gains, I dont think I'd want to be living in Toronto anymore. There are plenty of reasons for terrorists to strike Canada, and I get the feeling the number of reasons will mount with a PC led government.

My fear is a result of ignorance. My ignorance results from not caring. So maybe I shouldn't really be afraid.

Anyway, someone show me a cost benefit analysis of the situation.

I'm not seeing why, other than stronger economic ties with the US, people should be happy with Harpers policies or the parties beliefs... We already have good relations with the US in terms of trade. We're their biggest trading partners... Anti-American sentiments? Of course... Why do you think when Canadians go to Europe, rest of the world, we're looked on much better... MUCH better... than americans? Military campaigns? I think the Liberal government made great decisions after the attacks on iraq and such... MAYBE it would be beneficial in the short term, like those recent disputes we've had over lumber, cattle, etc., those types of things can now be settled in a shorter time with the new government, but that's the only benefit...
Canada needs an identiy, not to be looked upon as a smaller United States...
