  • Disney and the Bible on Love

magic carpet Disney.  I grew up on Disney.  But I also grew up on the Bible.  And those two say very different things about love.

Mismatched and Dishonorable or Well-matched and Honorable

Disney said a perfectly mis-matched couple should most definately go against their parent's better judgement and sneak off to marry the love of their life.  Then will encounter many trials, but will always overcome them because they are in love and true love is all that matters.

The Bible taught me to not be unequally yoked and to honor my father and mother.

Selfishly Impulsive or Wise and Patient

Disney said sneaking away from home to hang out with my love interest is an okay thing to do; that you should go after the things that you want with all you've got no matter what anybody says.

The Bible taught me to seek wise counsel in all big decisions and that part of love is patience.

    Selfish or Selfless

Disney said that a couple in love should make their love the center of the universe.  Nothing else matters.

The Bible taught me to love all, to consider my husband and I as one, and to put others first.

    Conclusion

I should be able to easily conclude that the Disney stories were a bit flawed and will only bring trouble into my life.  But they did such a good job with the romantic starry skies, flying magic carpets, beautiful dresses, crowns, and handsome guys on horses who always put their princess first that it's hard to not want to Disney version of life.

    A Little More Personal

I have an ex-fiance.  My friends, family, and other wise counsel tell me I'm better off without him.  And, though I know they're right, I'm tempted to step off the path of wise choices and onto the Disney trail.  I want to rebel against my good advice and run to my prince (aka ex-fiance) (even if he is a beast), make it through any problem we encounter, ride off into the sunset in his big old truck and live Happily Ever After!

I've been in a similar situation recently. I agree that sometimes what we want is not what's best for us. Hang in there!

Good contrast. Bible truth will always cut through the Technicolor gleam and glitz to reveal the right path that God promises is best for us. Keep your eyes on Christ and don't forget to stay in the Word and prayer. Christ loves you and will help you through this time, enabling you to grow into a more beautiful person in the Faith.

But the truck could always break down.  God's Word won't.

God always has something better for us in store.

There is merit in the Disney stories, but you have to understand that real, true, Godly love is not based in a Fairy Tale.

i think i'll stay out of this one...

You say it well lil' sis they put enough truth in them to make you believe a lie.

As for the truck it is not "could break down" but it will sooner or later, it is manmade. Some men treat their wive's like they do their trucks. Trade them in after so many miles and get a new one. Me I will just keep up the maintance on mine, she has some rust spots and doors don't shut like the should but it will be all right.

There is this amazing and hilarious video by Christian comedian Nichole Johnson, "Keeping a Princess Heart in a Not-So-Fairy-Tale World".  If you can see it - do see it!!!  You will absolutely  it.  Watch it with a groups of friends if you can - I think funny stuff is all the more funnier when everyone else is laughing too.
