Morning meditation?

Or is it a tired Mama...with her preening babes?

I have to chuckle...DrTiff commented on how the idea of splitting the babytending between parents (parents in general...human or otherwise)  is a noble idea at first, but how mostly it fades to just Mama doing the tending.  That seems to be happening in this bird family too.  The past few mornings, Dad has been late for his shift.  Mama calls and calls him.  As far as I can tell, he didn't show up till for yesterday's 8am shift change till 1pm!   I just happened to catch The shift change.  He arrived, and Mama just stepped off the nest and never looked back.  My imagination perceived disgust.

This morning Mama was more frantic.  She called and called at 8am, and then left the nest to perch on the swingset to call Dad from there.  Then she went back to the nest to wait a little, and the cycle repeated for about an hour.  When she left the nest to call, she would let out a shrill, "cooo!", as if saying, "Where is that man???!!??"

He did eventually show up. (I think????  It's so hard to tell them apart)  Dad holds himself differently than Mama, which is how I usually tell.  He doesn't fruffle his feathers out like she does.  And the calling stopped, so I assumed that was him on the nest an hour later.

I thought I'd take a few behind-the-scenes shots of where we observe and photograph these birds...so here is the...

bathroomcam!  Ta da!

The toilet hasn't seen much action lately...except for standing on the lid to watch some birds.

And here's the....

Swingset cam, looking on to the laddercam, which is being used by an observing ds at this photographic moment.

We don't use the laddercam all that much anymore, since the babies are big enough to see easily around the clothespins..  And it is a bit unnerving to use, because we have so many powerlines traversing out  backyard.  The thought of being excited and engrossed in bird-photographing  under a powerline on a metal ladder...shudder...never mind...

Here's another shot from the late afternoon.  It's so bright up there on that white roof..I wonder if those birds get a headache from it.  I surely could...

Put on your sunglasses for this one:

Oh yeah... I have a life and a garden, too!  (not to mention children...  )  I bet it might be getting ho-hum around this blog with only bird pictures of the past few weeks.  I'll try to incorporate more elements of daily life in here after this post.

Have a good day!.

Those babies are growing up a lot faster than mine.  Do they mate for life?

Yeah...faster than mine, too! (-:

According to what I have read, they do mate for life.. One book said they mate for more than on season in a row...I guess implying that they could have more than one mate. I guess mortality of one of the doves can happen quite a bit, too.
