 taiko!

What a night!
This is Fushicho Daiko, a taiko drumming group from Phoenix, Az.  We first saw them perform several years ago at an Asian festival, and thus started a very long love affair of drums in our family, especially with ds. We have befriended them in our joint attempts to have them play in our city in the past year...still working on that one.  It had been almost two years since our last meeting, but  last night we had the treat of seeing them again in a neighboring city.

Taiko is a Japanese drumming art form dating back  2,000 years, as some sources say.  These huge drums were made from hallowed-out tree trunks, and can be larger than the drums shown here..  Taiko was used as a way for nearby villages to communicate, especially during war and for warning of natural disasters.  But as evident from the traditional songs the group plays, it was a community-centered and building activity also that served as group prayers and encouragement for daily events.  It is now almost exclusively a performing art in modern times.  For a more detailed history, go here.

In modern performances, taiko groups  also use other instruments, such as gongs and cymbals and flutes, as well as the voice.  There is much dancing and exciting choreography, too.

Back to last night's performance:

Some airy  (light as a feather?) sumo wrestlers  join in a piece about sumo...

Check out Kodo, a large internationally known taiko group.  And I just love this cd...done by Kodo and Grateful Dead drummer, Mickey Hart, and a score of international artists.  It's definately a fusion album with Asian, African, and Middle Eastern tones to it..it's wild and wonderful!

What neat pictures!  I absolutely love drumming. One of the first books I read on the spiritual side of drumming was by Mickey Hart :)  Thanks for the compliment on my blog pic. I was nervous about putting it up there lol.
