 Happy Summer Solstice!

Slow down and smell the roses!  Have a drink on the lazy hazy (dog) days of summer!

Wow!  Thanks for the interest in the wormies!  There were some questions to that post...here's some replies:

"Castings" is the pc term for worm poop!  And that is how worms "compost" the bedding and food left for them...they eat it, and leave the poop behind!  (yes pun intended...the heat is getting to my brain)

I don't know how many worms are in my bin...but I know that there are babies in there, so there are more all the time.  When I moved the castings to one side yesterday, it was like pushing against a wriggly, firm ((alive)) mass of dark dirt!  I would guess their numbers to be in the hundreds.  So we'll see how much food they take, and adjust accordingly when I peak in next week.

I am concerned about the afternoon temperatures...I put a thermometer in the bin this afternoon for an hour, and while it was 102 degrees outside, it was 94 degrees in the bin.  I hope they don't mind sweating it out till our rainy season starts in a few weeks.

Anyway, here are some photos from a summer solstice celebration put on by the Arizona State Museum in Tucson on Saturday.  They put together family programs every few months, and they are usually pretty good!

On display was the
 University of Arizona's solar car....

And cookies baking in a solar oven.  Chocolate chip!

An Ukrainian band.....

And for food...anything goes with indian fry bread and Mexican...

Tortillas!   Warm and good and made on the spot!   Dh and I opted for the India food stand...we had curry and nan. (bread) Dd joined us.  Ds had a bean burrito.

There were craft booths for the kids,  sun and star viewing from telescopes from FLandrau Science Center, and entertainment too.  We watched Odaiko Sonora...the new taiko group from Tucson.  They were handing out these tattoos to the kids...

Yeah!  I wanna do that!!!!!

What fun! Happy Solstice!

Our summer was ushered in with lightening, thunder and a short but torrential downpour this evening. It's still raining, but not quite so heavily. It was pretty exciting though. Scared the "castings" out of the dog!
