A riprian area (Sorry I didn't spell it right, Leafy,...even if you had your dictionary, I would have sent you on a little goosechase!) is an area where two different climates meet at a water body. In my local case, it is where a river meets a desert, and it consists of the greenery at the riverbank as the river meanders through the desert. Here, the high desert grassland gives way to green lushness, where large cottonwood and willow trees grow . It is literally a greenbelt running through the desert...it is so interesting to see...I'll go take a picture from the distance if anyone is interested.
So anyway, this greenbelt is a haven for many species of birds (and the birders who come to see them) and mammals and fish. The kinds of animals and foilage that you would only find around water..not likely elsewhere in the desert.
This is a picture of the riparian area I took last January. It is rather brown in the winter, but still beautiful.
This place is a nature playground for the kids. I love to watch them play at the water's edge and explore and find neat things. SOmetimes we see deer and exotic-looking birds and te evidence of other animals. |
