| | Oh where, oh where has ezboard gone..oh where , oh where can it be?
This pattern of sites disappearing is becoming too familiar! I wonder if ezboard has befallen the same fate as Xanga's denial of service? If so, I wonder if it is the same hacker?
I'm sitting here early in the morning with a cup of coffee in a quiet house. Ummmm....."celebrate the moments of your live", indeed! or that other slogan..."the best part of waking up is (insert your favorite hot beverage vice) in your cup!"
Let's see....gotta date with my friend and her two kids today. She homeschooled before and is returning to it this year. It's a big step for her....that looming back-to-school date is making her nervous I think. When her circle of school friends send their kids off, it will seem like she is stepping into the unknown...stepping off the edge of the secure earth. I kinda felt that way the first two years, too. It doesn't seem too much of a big deal this year...except I seem to reassess what we are doing (or not doing, is really more like it) and wonder if we should schedule a little bit more time to work on the basics...
So we will be seeing them this morning, and then be back for the afternoon, when ds wants to make a knight's helmet. It's a kit of sorts...made of heavy paperboard that you cut out and put together. Got the book from Fun Books...my favorite educational catalog.
He has really been interested in ancient warriors...greek, roman, european knights, etc. He makes his own garb out of posterboard and weapons, too. We have checked out many books and have read through them. He loves reading the Magic Treehouse books and other fictional stories on these periods. There are several history channel videos at the library that we check out...one on armor around the world, one on sword-making and using, one on spears and slings, and a Nova on trabuchets and other catapult devices of the middle ages. He sits there glued and fascinated. All of this from my sensitive boy.
I had a thought the other day...maybe it wasn't the first time I thought it...maybe I had heard it before and finally now it took hold in me. It's about the fascination kids have with weapons...guns, swords, etc. Perhaps little kids are so fascinated with weapons because it empowers them in some way at a time in their lives when they really feel that they have very little power of their own. So the guns and swords, etc are like a symbol of power that enables them in their play. As they get older, they find other ways of empowering themselves...but this may be a first step for many kids. It kind of takes the mystique out of when a child doesn't have access to a toy gun, he will use his finger or make something out of a stick, etc. I think I will try this theory out o na few people....I am especiallly curious of the response I will get from those who don't allow weapon play.
Wow..i am still sitting here in a quiet house! Perhaps this is what I have been needing n order to write...just a few moments when someone isn't coming up to me needing or asking something. it seems that a mom sitting at a keyboard is like a magnet...just like a mom with a phone in her ear. |
